Big Brother Africa: Leave BBA Alone

The brouhaha over the Big Brother Africa reality show is yet to abate, even as Nigerians get set for the third edition of the show likely to commence this month. A section of the Nigerian audience who are not comfortable with the broadcast of the reality show in Nigeria given the events of the last days in BBA2 have consistently harped on its content for which you are likely to think they are justified.

First, I would like to agree with the lot who have described the noise about BBA as a mere distraction from the real issues plaguing the country politically, economically, socially and culturally. A larger percentage of the populace would rather the government and leadership found quick solutions to the growing trend of poverty, unemployment, and insecurity than waste precious time debating a reality show meant to tickle entertainment buffs who could afford the luxury of pay TV while the rest of us die by installment.

Come to think of it, Pay TV, though not totally new to Nigerians, still remains a preserve of the exclusive few. Put together, the figure of privileged Nigerians who enjoy access to direct-to-home (DTH) broadcast from international and local channels is still relatively low. On these cable channels, there are over a hundred programmes, and BBA is just one of them.

Given our purchasing power and the regular fluctuating value of the Naira, how many of us can truly afford the luxury of N9, 000 a month for DSTV subscription? This explains why it still baffles one’s imagination the number of articles in the press about BBA and the call for its ban. Should that be the concern of serious-minded people considering the collapse of infrastructure and the intractable problem of power in Nigeria?

Nevertheless, one feels it is pertinent to take an overview of the reality show as a creative concept with its own merits and demerits. Weighing BBA on a scale, the merits far outweigh the demerits. For me as a student of literature, BBA falls under the category of TV concept generation, a process akin to literary production. It begins with an idea whose realization is driven by the enthusiasm it generates among followers of events on the series. In that light, I would like to consider BBA as a fusion of diverse African cultures, as twelve contestants across the vast continent are brought together under the same roof for a period of 90 days. These housemates become automatic ambassadors of their countries, and go ahead to showcase their people’s value to the entire world through their action or inaction in the house.

And who are these housemates? For God’s sake, we are talking of adults well above the age of 18; some of them established professionals. Bertha, the Zimbabwean representative in the BBA2, is a lawyer and PR/communications consultant. The Malawian, Code, of the same BBA2 is an established broadcaster/DJ. Our own Ofunnekama is a graduate of Chemistry and worked in a reputable organization before entering the house. These are cultured adults by all standards who were fully aware of the implications of their actions. One would not be incorrect to say they have the right to choose what pleased them. Was that not why they entered the show in the first instance?
