‘Digital Switchover to Make Nigeria Biggest TV Market in Africa’

Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, vice president, has reiterated that the digital switchover being undertaken by the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, will make Nigeria the biggest digital television market in Africa.

Speaking at the launch of the Hi-Impact TV at the Hi-Impact Planet Amusement Park and Resort, Ibafo, Ogun State, Prof. Osinbajo noted that the digital switchover would also positively impact the Nigerian film industry and contribute to the growth of the economy.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN According to him: “With our population and a TV penetration of about 2.5m digital TV homes, the digital switchover ensured by the National Broadcasting Commission and other stakeholders will make Nigeria the biggest digital TV market in Africa.”

Represented by Folorunsho Folarin-Coker, Director- General, Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation, NTDC, the VP said the launch of the TV station was a revolution in the Nigerian broadcast, entertainment and media industry.

“Since it promises to be the very first TV channel in Nigeria to transmit all its programmes completely in full High-Definition, HD, and this landmark event supports government’s resolve to carry out reforms in the sector and grow the economy by leveraging on the potential of the creative sector and providing sustainable platforms to ensure real growth in the sector,” he said.

Osinbajo said the launch would provide the country another opportunity to showcase its rich culture and engage the creative talents to provide content for production and increase the number of channels available to viewers nationwide.

He said: “This will improve employment and contribute significantly to the nation’s GDP as actors, producers, directors, cameramen, scriptwriters among others will all be gainfully employed directly or indirectly due to the launch we are witnessing today.”

While commending the owners of Hi-Impact TV, Solution Media and Infotech, Prof. Osinbajo said he hoped the station would benefit the host community.

Earlier, Prince Adeleye Lipede, Managing Director, Solution Media and Infotech,  disclosed that the station being the first full HD television in Nigeria had been designed to focus largely on family entertainment and education.

He added: “We have engaged professional teachers to take subjects offered by secondary school students and JAMB to complement what they are taught in school.”

MTN Foundation Extends Emergency Ward Intervention Project to Hospitals in the South East

In continuation of its commitment to improve the quality of health of our people especially during period of emergency, MTN Foundation will be providing medical equipment and supplies to the emergency wards of six hospitals in Anambra, Ebonyi and Imo States under its Emergency Ward Intervention Project.

 

The hospitals include; Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA 1), Ebonyi, Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka,  Anambra and Imo State University Teaching Hospital (IMSUTH), Owerri.

Under this project, MTN Foundation provides medical equipment and consumables ranging from stethoscopes, suction machines, fracture immobilizers, laryngoscopes; digital patient monitors etc. to hospitals across Nigeria.

 

In Phase 1 of the project, MTN Foundation provided these medical items to emergency wards of hospitals in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.

Acrimony, Hailey Baldwin, NYSC portal & World Cup 2018 trend on Google Search Nigeria

Acrimony a film produced by Tyler Perry has topped Google search this week, according to Google official.

 

Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Anglophone West Africa, made the disclosure on Wednesday in Lagos.

 

He stated that “Acrimony is an intriguing psychological thriller which tells the story of a faithful black woman who feels enraged after being betrayed by her husband.

 

“The film has attracted mixed reactions among Nigerians and is now trending on social media.

 

“Taking to their Twitter handles, Nigerians voiced their views about the thriller using the hashtag #Acrimony, making ‘Acrimony’ a top trending term”.

 

The Google manager also noted that earlier this week, Canadian singer, actor and songwriter, Justin Bieber shared a heartfelt message on social media confirming his engagement to American model and television personality, Hailey Baldwin.

 

He added that the couples had dated briefly in 2016 before splitting, but were spotted back together by fans in July, with engagement rumours circling shortly thereafter.

 

“In the wake of the announcement, fans have raced to Google in search of more information about Bieber’s fiancée,” Kola-Ogunlade said.


He also explained that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has opened its portal for the 2018 Batch B mobilisation exercise.

 

According to him, the agency issued a statement on Monday informing all prospective corps members, at home and abroad, to register for the mobilisation exercises between Tuesday, 10 July and 16 July, 2018.

 

He noted that NYSC members intending to partake in the ‘Batch B’ mobilisation exercises have since taken to Google to search for the necessary information needed for registration.

 

Kola-Ogunlade said that France 1- 0 victory against Belgium on Tuesday generated a lot of search results.

 

He said “France reached the World Cup final for a third time in its history, thanks to a header from Samuel Umtiti that gave the 1998 champions a 1- 0 victory against the Belgium team on Tuesday.

 

“France will play Croatia in Sunday’s final at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium.”

 

He noted that football fans in Nigeria took to Google to search for results, recaps, and fixtures for the final matches.
