Adeleke University Unveils N50m ICT Resource Centre
Students of Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State are set to join their counterparts in other private universities across the country benefiting from international certifications in information and communications technology and e-business following the commissioning of a N50 million ICT resource centre at the school by New Horizons, a global private IT training institute at the weekend.
The IT resource centre which has over 100 HP CPU-Monitor combined computers, intelligent boards, multimedia projectors, networking, software, international IT-E Biz courses/curricula, furniture, UPS, certified instructors, international exams centre, students courseware will help students escape the pervasive graduate unemployment syndrome which is ravaging job market.
Professor Oluwole Gideon Amusan, vice chancellor, the university speaking at the commissioning said it will enable every student irrespective of his or her academic discipline have minimum of four international skills certifications at 90 per cent subsidized rate, before graduation from the university.
It will position them in global software development industry, e-banking, e-medical/telemedicine, e- government, e-legal administration, oil and gas as well as telecoms sector with attendant employment and self-employment opportunities.
He said: “It will provide skills that make our students more marketable and relevant to the demands of the job market. Today, ICT has made scholars to redefine literacy. Man will return to the Stone Age if ICT is removed from learning. Adeleke University deems it fit that all our students should have certifications in CCNA, Oracle, Java, Microsoft and other globally acclaimed IT and e-business professionals courses.”
Mr. Tim Akano, managing director, New Horizons Nigeria, said the company has extended globally recognised IT certifications which are sought after by employers across all sectors to almost all the private universities in the last 10 years training over 50,000 students nationwide.
He urged the students to avail themselves of the opportunity presented by the resource centre by taking serious their coursework and strive to get the certification. He said the world previously was ruled by the agrarian revolution, industrial revolution but in the 21st century, it is dominated by the information age which relies on ICT skills.
“For any person to make great impact, he/she must have ICT skills. Whether you are studying Nursing, Business Administration, accounting, medicine, biology, law, etc, you need ICT skills. We felt that Adeleke University should not be left behind because the Internet has turned the world to a global village. You will compete for employment with people from China, India, USA, etc even as the job market is looking for people with the requisite skills irrespective of where they come from. You owe it a duty to put Nigeria on the global stage. With your IT and e-business certification you can be a millionaire as well as an employer of labour.”
Akano informed the students that today’s world economy is being ruled by the IT industry. “60 per cent of the richest people in the world and USA in particular are in the ICT industry such as the founder of Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Google, Twitter, etc who are billionaires. “In the next 20 years, Nigeria’s crude oil will no longer become the major revenue earner. The services industry will be depend on ICT for revenue and it is here you come in.”
Also, Dr. Longe Olumide, ICT director and head, department of computer science while taking the governing council and management of Adeleke University as well as New Horizons, said the ICT certifications will make the students digital natives, place the school at the top among the like of MIT and Harvard university.” He urged the students to make use of the opportunity and entrench the young university among Nigeria’s leading institutions.
Gartner predicts that by 2028, 75 percent of enterprise software engineers will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) code assistants, up from less than 10 percent, currently.
According to a Gartner poll of 598 global respondents conducted in the third quarter of 2023, 63 percent of organisations are now testing, deploying, or have previously implemented AI code assistants.
AI code assistants provide for more capabilities than only code development and completion, notes the research firm.
According to Gartner, the use of AI code assistants can lead to higher work satisfaction and retention, resulting in lower turnover costs.
Philip Walsh, senior principal analyst at Gartner, comments: “Software engineering leaders must determine ROI and build a business case as they scale their rollouts of AI code assistants.
“However, traditional ROI frameworks steer engineering leaders toward metrics centred on cost reduction. This narrow perspective fails to capture the full value of AI code assistants.”
Gartner notes that software engineering leaders must “reframe the ROI conversation from cost reduction to value generations”.
Walsh adds: “Calculating time savings on code generation is a good place to begin building a more robust value story. To convey the full enterprise value story for AI code assistants, software engineering leaders should connect value enablers to impacts, and then analyse the overall return to the organisation.”
National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has said that the planned national ID card will be issued to applicants by their banks.
NIMC said it is working with the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS) to deliver the cards to applicants.
“The card will be issued through the applicants’ respective banks in line with existing protocols with the issuance of the Debit/Credit cards,” the agency said at the weekend update on its official X handle.

It said applicants need to request their cards with their NIN “through the self-service online portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks”.
“The card will be powered by the AFRIGO card scheme, an indigenous scheme powered by NIBSS,” NIMC said.
“The card can be picked up by holders at the designated center or delivered to the applicants at the requested location at an extra cost to be borne by the applicants,” the update read.
National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has said that the new national Identity card, powered by AfriGo Card, is a single card with multiple services.
NIMC made the clarification against the confusion and criticisms that have trailed the AfriGo Card , touted as a National Domestic Card Scheme.
NIMC is launching the AfriGo Card, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS), and has had appointed SecureID, a Lagos headquartered company to manufacture the Card Scheme
Making clarification on the card, Kayode Adegoke, head of Corporate Communications of the NIMC, said the General multipurpose card (GMPC) will eliminate the need for multiple cards.

“The single GMPC has multiple use cases: Payments/Financial, Government intervention/services, travel, etc.
