#GII2017: Global Innovation Index 2017 For Release This Week

The Global Innovation Index (GII) 2017 will be released in Geneva, Switzerland, on June 15, 2017. The launch will be webcast live from 10:00 a.m. Geneva time.

The index provides, World Intellectual Property Organisation announced on its page, detailed metrics about the innovation performance of 127 countries and economies around the world.

Its 81 indicators explore a broad vision of innovation, including political environment, education, infrastructure and business sophistication.

The GII 2017, Nigeria CommunicationsWeek gathered, focuses on innovation in agriculture and food systems. In the coming decades, the agriculture and food sector will face an enormous rise in global demand, increased competition for limited natural resources, and the effects of climate change.

Innovation, according to the panel, is key to sustaining the productivity growth required to meet this rising demand and to helping enhance the networks ("food systems") that integrate sustainable food production, processing, distribution, consumption, and waste management.

This year’s report reviews the state of innovation in agriculture and food systems across sectors and geographies. Chapters of the report provide more details on this year’s theme from academic, business, and particular country perspectives from leading experts and decision makers.

The GII is the premier reference on innovation and a valuable benchmarking tool for policymakers, business leaders and other stakeholders. Co-published by WIPO, Cornell University and INSEAD, the report provides an annual ranking of the innovation capabilities and performance of economies around the world.

Innovation plays a key role as a driver of economic growth and prosperity. The GII seeks to improve the way innovation is measured and understood.

It recognizes the need for a broad vision of innovation, applicable to developed and emerging economies alike, and includes indicators that go beyond traditional measures of innovation, such as the level of research and development.
