Eddie Kisses $200,000 Goodbye in Apprentice Africa

Eddie Mbugua, has analytical mind, a competitive spirit, calculative disposition, and a dose of humour but they were not enough to save him from the firing line.

He is the 9th person to leave The Apprentice Africa house and that is goodbye to the mega prize, a lucrative corporate job with befitting perks and an annual salary of $200,000 and a luxury car.

Eddie as his fellow housemates call him; has apologized profusely "for letting myself, my family, and my country down!"

His journey out of the race started in Episode 9, when Eddie decided to bite the CEO’s (Biodun Shobanjo, advertising czar) bullet on the platter of responsibility.

In an interview with The Apprentice Africa news website, he was quick to refute the speculations that he considers himself a hero for his ‘tear-evoking’ exit

"I don’t see myself as a hero, quite the opposite actually! I let myself, my family, my country down." Eddie said, "Many had high expectations of me, as I too did and I let them down. For that I apologize, but sometimes you have to be a man and bite the bullet – the girls did a great job (as you saw) there was no way I was going to efface that. I really wanted to be Shobanjo’s Apprentice and knew I had what it took."

On being the third Kenyan ‘martyr’ to have ‘bitten the bullet’ on The Apprentice Africa, Eddie had this to say: "I was no martyr!" He lets out a hearty laugh. "I just didn’t want to shame myself on national television – there I was with three very hard working ladies, how could I then turn on them and start pointing fingers? Sometimes you have to be a man. In Kenya, we are taught to take responsibility for our actions…we have a much disciplined social and educational system: pity our leaders didn’t attend the same schools as we three (Anthony, Joyce, and myself) did."

Eddie also endorsed his long-time ally. "Tunde is my candidate of choice. He is one of the few people who can awaken this continent to greatness." while commenting on what he described as the ‘Eunice Spell’, "The show seems to be so captivated by Eunice, but not necessarily for her input but her presence- its not a beauty contest might I remind you."

As it is now, Eddie Mbugua is looking forward to the challenge of being a good and loving dad; come August, 2008 and will continue to watch The Apprentice Africa, because there will still be a lot to learn from the czar

The event highlighted the positive impact of the awards show over the years and marked the announcement of new developments to the upcoming 10th edition.

The African Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) has become the standard for recognising excellence in the African film industry. Through the years, the AMVCAs has invested N9 billion in award events, training and logistics, and created over 27,000 long and short-term jobs. The awards have also honoured over 300 African film and TV industry professionals in front and behind the camera.

The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) has a track record of successful collaborations with both new and existing sponsors, which have proven to be mutually beneficial. One of the most loved malt drink brands, Amstel Malta, is once again the headline sponsor of the awards ceremony, while Pepsi is also returning as a sponsor.

“In partnership with our sponsors, Amstel, Pepsi, Promasidor, and Martell, we call on Africa to join in this celebration, as we begin with the announcement of final nominees in each category, live across all Africa Magic channels, on March 24 at 8 pm.

“The voting portal will open immediately after the announcement,” Dr. Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content and Channels, West Africa, MultiChoice, said.

Francis Obiajulu, the Senior Brand Manager at Amstel Malta, explained that their headline sponsorship has continued for nine years due to the significant and noticeable positive impact the sponsorship has had on the brand image, brand health, and equity growth.

Segun Ogunleye, the General Manager of Marketing for Seven-Up Bottling Company, reiterated AMVCA’s impact on connecting brands with consumers on a deeper level. Ogunleye explained that in a market where everyone is offering the same thing, the only thing that can set you apart is having an emotional connection with your audience.

Other sponsors of the 10th AMVCAs include TECNO, Verve, QuickTeller, Tiger Beer, MTN, and Indomie. The AMVCA 10th edition will run for two days, starting on May 10 with the Young Filmmakers and Content Creators event in the morning, followed by the Cultural Day and Opening Night celebration in the evening. The Main Awards Ceremony unfolds on the night of May 11, 2024.
