IBM, Nokia, Others Launch IoT Cybersecurity Alliance

IBM, Nokia, AT&T, Palo Alto Networks, Symantec and Trustonic have announced that they are collaborating to help address IoT security challenges.

The “IoT Cybersecurity Alliance” said the combination of industry-leading security providers and IoT experts will research and raise awareness of ways to better secure the IoT ecosystem.

“The explosive growth in the number of IoT devices is only expected to continue; therefore, so must the associated cybersecurity protections,” said Mo Katibeh, SVP of Advanced Solutions at AT&T. “Today’s businesses are connecting devices ranging from robots on factory floors to pacemakers and refrigerators. Helping these organisations stay protected requires innovation across the whole IoT ecosystem to enable sustainable growth.”

In the past three years, AT&T said it has seen a 3,198 per cent increase in attackers scanning for vulnerabilities in IoT devices.

When AT&T surveyed companies in 2016, 58 per cent of respondents said they were not confident in the security of their IoT devices.

The Alliance members believe the key to IoT security lies in protecting all devices at the endpoint, network, cloud and application layer, and using overarching threat analytics to study the overall ecosystem and designing products with a built- in, always-on security approach.

The members want to advise customers and educate the industry on the cybersecurity measures needed to create a safer IoT ecosystem, foster collaboration and advance innovation with top cybersecurity and IoT thought leaders.

Specifically, goals of the IoT Cybersecurity Alliance are to:

Collaborate and research security challenges of IoT across verticals and use cases such as automotive, industrial, smart cities and healthcare. The Alliance will take use cases or business challenges in IoT cybersecurity to dissect and advance security concerns and identify ways to implement security across the value chain.

Dissect and solve for IoT security problems at every critical layer of security. These include the endpoint, connectivity, cloud, and data/application layers, and the Alliance says it includes experts at each of these layers to help educate businesses and consumers on how to protect their connections.

Make security easy to access across the ecosystem. Security needs to exist across the value chain, and the Alliance says users will benefit from innovative IoT services and infrastructures that can withstand the ever-evolving threat landscape.

Influence security standards and policies. Using each group member’s leadership and expertise will raise awareness of cybersecurity, with the Alliance engaging regularly with policymakers and other organisations.

“Be it a connected car, pacemaker or coffee maker, every connected device is a potential new entry point for cyberattacks,” said Bill O’Hern, Chief Security Officer at AT&T. “Yet, each device requires very different security considerations. It’s become essential for industry leaders and innovators like those in the founding members of this Alliance, to work together to help the industry find more holistic security approaches for IoT.”

The IoT Cybersecurity Alliance intends to bring together market leaders in device security, connectivity, data, cloud, and applications, creating the opportunity for end-to-end IoT security to help businesses continue to grow and compete in the ever-changing market. Its members say they will help the industry maximize the advantages of IoT while educating about how to keep companies and consumers more secure.

NIMC Boss Says National ID Crucial for Access to Social Services

Engr. Aliyu Aziz, director-general, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has identified digital identity as a critical factor for individuals to access social benefits including subsidies and entitlements.

 

According to Engr. Aziz, since public and private sector agencies require proof of identity as a prerequisite for providing services to individuals, failure to prove identity forms a major barrier barring people from accessing social benefits.

 

He disclosed this in a keynote paper entitled ‘Digital Inclusion: Opportunities, Challenges and Strategies’ which he presented at the 27th annual conference of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), in Ibadan, Oyo state recently, a statement from the commission said yesterday.

 

“Inability to prove identity is one of the biggest barriers preventing access to benefits, subsidies, exercise of basic rights as well as claiming entitlements,” he said, adding that “without knowing who the people are, no government or private sector will be able to effectively deliver important services such as social safety net, elections, agriculture, pension and education, among others.’’

 

Engr. Aziz, also said “Identity is a pre-requisite for a country’s economic, social and political progress and development,” because “good identification works hand-in-hand with greater use of internet, payments and skills for a vibrant digital economy.”

Lagos, Zipline Ink MOU to Deploy Drones for Healthcare Delivery

The Lagos State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Zipline International Inc, operators of drones, to offer a drone-enabled supply chain solution in the health sector.

 

While signing the MOU, Mr. Hakeem Fahm, commissioner for Science and Technology, noted that the new partnership is based on the health care initiatives of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

 

Fahm said the partnership with the State Government would leverage on technology to improve the supply chain of critical medical supplies, reduce waste and save lives.

 

He noted that drones would be used to ensure secured, reliable and timely deliveries of essential health care products to publicly-owned hospitals and other health facilities in the State

 

In his words “Lagos Sate has began a process that will allow us to be able to deliver critical medical needs of every publicly-owned hospital in the State within a short period when needed.

 

“Zipline services will compliment Lagos States existing medical supply chain by responding in minutes to request for cold chain products, unexpected stock outs and emergencies,” the commissioner added.

 

According to Mr. Diekoye Oyeyinka, representative of Zipline who signed the MoU on behalf of his company, “Lagos state will be the first mega city in the world to have an autonomous instant delivery system, when it is fully deployed”.

 

Zipline is a robotics airplane manufacturer based in California focusing on delivering medical supplies to undeveloped and underdeveloped areas.

 

They work to improve access to healthcare and save lives.

Autodesk Africa Advocates Digital Construction

Autodesk a leader in 3D design, engineering and entertainment software has called for the adoption of digital technologies in the construction industry.

The Company made the call at a Forum themed: “The Future of Making Things” held at the Radisson Blu Hotel Lagos yesterday.

The event highlighted how the disruptive power of digital technologies can enable a more profitable, resilient and agile construction industry and explained that the Construction industry is a new frontier for innovation.

Ibeanu went further to share success stories attained from the utilization of Building Information Modelling (BIM).

The event further explored the relevance of augmented and virtual reality, generative design, AI/Machine learning, smart cities, factory of the future, and climate change solutions, in the future of construction and infrastructure.

Autodesk desires to help people digitize the construction process and project management, building a unified construction data platform to provide accurate information at the point of decision-making and drive better decisions and more profitable project outcomes.
