Groups Commend Govt for Voiding Nitel Sale to Transcorp

Two workers fora have commended the Federal Government over voiding the sale of Nigeria Telecommunications Plc (Nitel) to Transnational Corporation (Transcorp) and the payment of the balance of the five-year pension buy-out.
The groups, Nitel/MTEL Workers Consultative Forum and Concerned Nitel/MTEL Disengaged Operational Staff, in separate letters to the Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) urged government to use the window to revitalize and refocus the national carrier.
In their letter, the Nitel/MTEL Workers Consultative Forum wrote, “we hope and pray you shall be there for us in our future endeavour, most especially the resuscitation of Nitel/MTEL which has suffered six years of neglect and near decadence under the management of Pentascope and Transcorp.” The group’s statement was signed by Christopher Okoro, co-ordinator, , and Habeeb Bello, secretary, The forum comprises pensioners, disengaged and serving staff of Nitel/MTEL.
The Concerned Nitel/MTEL Disengaged Operational Staff said in their letter that the “revocation of the sale of NITEL to Transcorp has rekindled their hopes after the neglect and asset stripping that the two enterprises went through in the past six years.” Their statement which was signed by 12 officials of the group noted that as trained and tested hands, they are “disposed to come up with technical inputs on the modalities to re-position Nitel/MTEL to make it viable for a genuine core investor.”
