Bharti Airtel has announced that Christian de Faria will take over as CEO of its African operations at the start of next year.

He will replace Manoj Kohli, who is relocating to India. Kohli has led Airtel’s African operations for the past three years.

The changeover will be a phased one, with de Faria joining Airtel Africa in mid-September, initially in charge of Anglophone operations. He will take overall responsibility from 1 January 2014.

The new appointee has over 30 years experience which includes spells with MTN, Telekom Malaysia and Deutsche Telekom. Most recently he worked at MTN where his responsibilities included health initiatives.

Kohli will continue to lead Airtel’s international operations and provide “governance oversight to Airtel Africa, Airtel Bangladesh and Airtel Sri Lanka”.

His other responsibilities include leading on strategic issues such as M&A, matters relating to Towerco and global partnerships.
