As part of its commitment to contribute and support the development of the education sector of the nation, Nigeria’s fastest growing and most innovative telecoms operator, Etisalat Nigeria, in partnership with the Lagos Empowerment & Resource Network (LEARN), recently held a Career Counseling programme for students from selected public schools in Lagos State.
The Career Counseling session, which was the 13th in the series, is an Etisalat Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, and provides a platform for its employees to impact the lives of students in public schools across the nation with needed tools and guidance for their future.
To date over seven thousand students have benefitted from this program.
Speaking about the initiative, Aidevo Odu-Thomas, chief executive officer, Etisalat Nigeria, Matthew Willsher, represented by the Company Secretary, Etisalat Nigeria, noted that the initiative is designed to guide students through the process of making quality career decisions.
“The choice of a career path is a decision that many have made mistakes about overtime and at Etisalat we are committed to making sure we equip the Nigerian youth with the skills, nuggets and doctrines needed to excel after school. Career counselling is one of our numerous initiatives targeted at making sure students are able to develop their potentials and deliver optimally in the labour market,” he said.
Also speaking at the event was the Tutor General / Permanent Secretary for Lagos State Education District II, Titilayo Solarin who was represented by the District’s Chief Education Officer, Abisola Gbotoso. She applauded Etisalat for this initiative and referred to it as a timely investment that will augment the Government’s efforts at brightening the future of the students through quality education.
The schools in attendance at the Career Counseling Programme include Army Cantonment Junior Secondary School; Army Cantonment Senior Secondary School; Army Children Junior Secondary School; Army Children Senior Secondary School; Community Junior High School, Maryland; Community Senior High School, Maryland; Immaculate Heart Comprehensive Junior Secondary School; Immaculate Heart Comprehensive Senior Secondary School; Mende Junior High School and Mende Senior High School; all in Lagos State.
The 2015 Career Counselling Session featured presentations on various careers such as, Project Management, Engineering & Digitalization, and Law. The students also participated in Spelling Bee and Debate Competitions, which won both the students and the schools exciting prizes.
