Telecommunications giant, MTN has kicked off the 4th edition of the annual MTN 21 Days of Y’ello Care, a MTN groupwide staff volunteerism challenge.
In his good goodwill message at the official launch of the initiative held at the Golden Plaza, headquarter of the company, Ahmad Farroukh, CEO, MTN explained that “The 21 Days of Y’ello Care is the annual MTN Group Community Care initiative aimed at transforming the communities in which MTN operate.
The 2010 edition he said, runs on two platforms, 1 Goal and United Against Malaria and that he has no doubt that MTN will demonstrate its “spirit of caring, guided by values of leadership, innovation, relationship, integrity and can-do.”
Funmi Omogbenigun, general manager, Corporate Communications in her address explained that as “Africa’s first and only global sponsor of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, MTN has an unprecedented opportunity to merge its passion for Africa with the continent’s passion for football to drive CSR initiatives and ensure that Africa leaves a lasting legacy.”
She said MTN is plugging into two of Africa’s biggest problems, malaria and access to education.
“United Against Malaria is an established partnership among advocacy groups around the world to combat the prevalence of malaria and its associated deaths,” she said, adding that, “MTN has rolled out a “Kick Out Malaria” campaign to reach its consumers in various operating countries and aims to distribute one million mosquito nets via the 2010 Y’ello Care Platform and other CSR activities.”
Speaking on 1 Goal: Education for All, Omogbenigun said “the campaign seizes the power of football to ensure education for all by collecting names and backing from the public, footballers, celebrities to make a united plea to governments to meet their targets on “Education for All,” an international commitment to provide quality public education to all children and adults by 2015.”
Present at the occasion are Aki and Pawpaw (Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme), Saint Obi, Ike Sorunmu, Nigeria ex goalkeeper, Fela Durotoye and other distinguished guests.
As part of activities to kick start the event, Ahmad Farrouk lead the charge by kicking a goal into the net and was followed by other distinguished guests.
