Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr., Globacom chairman, has been honoured with the Man of the Year 2009 award at the Nigerian Information Technology and Telecommunications Award (NITTA) ceremony held in Lagos.
In his citation read at the event, the award organisers said Dr. Adenuga was noted for “doing things that people thought were impossible” and commended him for always breaking new grounds in telecommunications investments and technology acquisition.
Globacom also won two awards at the event, as the Pan African Investor of the Year and the Best People-Oriented Telecom Company of the Year. The company won the Pan African Investor Award for its multinational undersea cable infrastructure, Glo 1,  and rapid entry into other African countries.
The citation for Globacom stated that no other network had rolled out in another country within five years of operating in its home country. Globacom set the record by launching its network in Benin Republic in its fourth year, and obtaining licences in Ghana and Cote D’Ivoire thereafter.
Globacom was also named the Best People-Oriented Telecom Company of the Year for its “We Live Where You Live”, “Rock and Rule” and “Laffta Fest” projects.
While applauding Dr. Adenuga as the Man of the Year, NITTA noted  that the businessman had made Globacom the first telecoms firm in the region to commercially launch the 3G network and the first single company to lay an undersea cable across West Africa to Europe.
Dr. Adenuga, it was noted, had taken Glo to Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana and the Republic of Benin, thereby setting the tempo of competition in the region, which would automatically raise the quality of service to international standard.
The event was ttended by Ernest Ndukwe, executive vice chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), who also delivered the keynote lecture. Globacom’s Executive Director, Human Resources, Mr. Adewale Sangowawa was in the panel that discussed the paper.
The panel of judges for the NITTA award, made up of eminent Nigerians from the telecoms industry, law, print and broadcast media, led by Dr. Tom Adaba, acknowledged that Globacom is a one-stop telecommunications solutions provider and the ultimate National Operator.
