Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr, chairman Globacom, has declared that the network Glo is building in Ghana would be the best in Africa.
In a message at the 2009 Glo-CAF Awards held at the State House Banquet Hall, Accra, Ghana, Dr Adenuga said that Globacom had deployed the best telecommunications technology to build a robust network capable of offering seamless, world class mobile and data services.
He affirmed that Glo Mobile Ghana would commence operations this year.
"In the next few months, you will start to experience a communication network the like of which has never been experienced in Ghana before. This year, we have made enormous progress and the progress will be felt right here on the streets of Ghana very soon indeed," Dr Adenuga declared.
"We have been building a mobile network in Ghana that really will be second to none. I am sure that you have seen all of our billboards on the streets and I assure you they are not empty promises. Over the last year, we have also been laying our own multi-million dollar submarine cable, Glo 1, all the way from Europe, connecting through to the States and crossing the Atlantic to Africa's West Coast. It has already landed in Accra and it will literally change the way that Africa does business," the Globacom chairman stated.
He added that the facility would for the first time provide Ghanaians, Nigerians and Africans at large an almost unlimited bandwidth and high-speed internet connection between the region and the rest of the world. This, he explained, would make all telecom services much faster, much more reliable and much cheaper for everyone.
"And it will stimulate a new era of prosperity across the continent by facilitating everything from distance learning to video conferencing, new TV channels, online medical diagnostics and full telemedicine services. And what' more, it has sufficient capacity to cater for the region's requirements for years to come", Dr Adenuga concluded.
The Ghanaian government had at the event described Globacom as a company all Africans should be proud of. John Dramani Mahama Vice President of the country,, who represented President John Atta Mills, commended Globacom for its commitment to the development of Africa.
He noted that the company had established itself as a true giant in telecommunications and a vanguard of youth and sports development in the continent.
"We appreciate Globacom for the work they are doing in telecoms and in football. We thank them for raising the standard of the Glo-CAF awards and generally for their support for football in the continent," Mahama declared.
He added that the company had through the sponsorship of the leagues in Nigeria and Ghana raised the standard of domestic competitions in both countries. "Glo has done very well. It is a company we can all be proud of," the Vice President stated. He said the government and people of Ghana were anxiously waiting for Glo to roll out services in the country.
Former Ghanaian President John Kuffour as well as Akua Sena Dansua, Sports minister,, Issa Hayatou, CAF president, Musiliu Obanikoro, Nigeria's High Commissioner to Ghana, and Ernest Ndukwe, executive vice chairman of Nigerian Communications Commission, , were among dignitaries that attended the ceremony.
