Anthony Joshua, Maya Angelou, others Headline trend on Google Search Nigeria

British-Nigerian professional boxer, Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua won his fight against Joseph Parker on a points decision at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday, dominated searches on Google Nigeria this week.

Google’s spokesman, Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, made this disclosure on Wednesday in Lagos.

He explained that” Anthony Joshua’s win against Joseph Parker made Fans in Nigeria raced to Google for more updates about the fight, making ‘Anthony Joshua’ a top trending search term.

“This win adds the World Boxing Organisation belt to Joshua’s titles, moving him a step closer to becoming the undisputed World Heavyweight Champion.

Deontay Wilder

Following the Anthony Joshua fight on Saturday, the new World Boxing Organisation (WBO) title holder  challenged American professional boxer Deontay Wilder to a match. Hours later, Wilders camp put out a statement accepting Joshua’s challenge.

The unification contest, which is set to be held sometime during the UK summer, will decide the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world in a two-fight scenario – the first most likely at Wembley Stadium and the second in Las Vegas or New York.

Boxing fans in Nigeria searched Google to get updates about the upcoming two-fight contest.

Maya Angelou

Popular American poet, singer, memoirist, and civil rights activist Maya Angelou, who died on May 28, 2014 at the age of 86, is being honoured by Google with a Doodle on her posthumous birthday.

Before her death, she published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry and was also credited with a list of plays, movies and television shows spanning over 50 years.

Nigerian users turned to Google to explore the history behind the Doodle.

Big Brother Naija 2018 housemate Khloe has emerged as the Head of House after Saturday’s eviction.

Winnie Mandela

South African anti-apartheid activist and politician Winnie Madikizela-Mandela died peacefully in the early hours of Monday following a long illness, which had seen her go in and out of hospital since the start of the year.

Winnie, who was popularly known as an anti-apartheid activist, politician, and ex-wife of Nelson Mandela, also served as a Member of Parliament from 1994 until her death.
