National Executive Council of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) recently paid courtesy visits to two leading telecommunications companies IHS Nigeria Plc and Internet Solutions as part of a strategic move to reposition and sustain the growth and development of telecommunications in Nigeria
Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, national president (ATCON) noted the contributions of IHS Nigeria Plc to the growth and development of telecommunications in Nigeria, especially in the area of telecommunications infrastructure building, infrastructure management and infrastructure lease and collocation. He commended IHS Nigeria Plc for abiding by all building standards, codes and ethics.
Ekuwem also said that the issue of multiple taxations had been fought and the court has given ruling in favour of the association. He said in order to tackle the problem of fear of environmental pollution, the public especially the villagers must be properly be educated about base stations, and he said the public’s has been misinformed about the erection of base stations around where they live. He therefore, called for the co-operation of all stakeholders in respect of enlightenment and education on sitting of base stations.
William Saad, managing director of IHS, in response, thanked the association for finding time to pay them a visit. He asked the Association to come to the rescue of telecom infrastructure facilities providers in Nigeria like IHS Nigeria Plc. He said their business or operations are being hindered by some challenges among which are multiple taxation s (State and local government), vandalization of base stations by area boys (Miscreants) and fear of environmental pollution power outage.
He further called on the association to salvage the situation by using the strength and influence of its membership.
At Internet Solutions, Mr. Gbenga Runsewe, , the chief marketing and sales officer spoke briefly about the company.
He said it was formally called Accelon Nigeria Ltd. And that Internet Solutions was one of the subsidiaries of Dimension Data which has its Head Office in South Africa .
He highlighted that the core areas of Internet Solutions are VPN, Hosting, Collocating and Internet Services.
Emmanuel Ekuwem commended the active impact the Internet Solutions is having on business and lives in Nigeria.
  He also thanked Internet Solutions for participating in ComBiT Africa 2008. He further said that ComBiT Africa has grown in scope, size and content and as a result of that the National Executive Council Members have opened up discussions with some International ICT Event Management Companies that is CEBIT and AITEC. He therefore   said that ATCON would like Internet Solutions to increase its visibility at this year’s edition of   ComBiT Africa as it will definitely impact positively on the bottom line.
