The ATM Industry Association has published "Cloud-Based ATMs — Future ATM Hardware and Software Architecture."

The report was researched and written by ATMIA 2015 International Consultant of the Year award winner Eric de Putter, managing partner of Payment Redesign, a press release said.

De Putter reviews evolving cloud-based ATM hardware and software architectures and processing solutions, and looks at new deployment potential arising from a more flexible, modular approach to ATM architecture.

"Innovation in the ATM industry right now is the hottest it has been in over a decade," said ATMIA CEO Mike Lee. "Eric has expertly assessed how the cloud can empower a new generation of ATM software and hardware. This study is yet another contribution from our association to furthering industry conversations and developments in the field of innovation."

Topics covered in the report include: the reduced total cost of ownership through the cloud;
 - possible future applications of the technology in the ATM industry; and
 - the impact on future operating system upgrades and migrations.

The report also discusses the increased ability to connect to nonbanking applications through the cloud such as lottery tickets sales, voting, and charitable donations.

"It's no exaggeration to say we're entering a new era for ATMs," Lee said. "This report will help our members better understand the window of opportunity which is opening up before our eyes."
