Boko Haram, the extremist Islamic group, operating in Northern Nigeria has been ranked as the 7th richest terrorist group with some $70 million in worth, according to a report published by ‘The Richest’.

The Richest suspects that Boko Haram made the over $70 million from ransoms collected for kidnappings between 2006 and 2011.

Boko Haram who is fighting to overthrow the Nigerian government in order to implement an Islamist regime, has evolved from a local insurgency to a brutal militant group that the United States has designated a terrorist organization.

Other top terror groups in the world according to The Richest are: the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, more commonly known as ISIS with its financial worth put at $2 billion; the  IRA with over $450 million, Taliban ($400 million), Al-Qaeda: ($100 million a year), FARC ($80-$350 million a year), and Lashkar-e-Tayyiba ($100 million a year) have been listed 2-6 richest respectively.

In Nigeria Boko Haram’s activities led to the bombing of United Nations, UN headquarters in Abuja and most recently abducted over 200 Nigerian school girls in defence of their namesake “Western Education is Sin”.

Since they have remained off the radar since their recent attacks, it’s unclear just how much money they make from their numerous kidnappings and the subsequent ransoms they procure.
