Nigerians took to Google search engine during the week to get more information on the declaration of President Muhammadu Buhari to seek re-election come 2019, the elimination of Barcelona by Roma and the 2018 edition of Wrestlemania, among others.
Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google Communications and Public Affairs Manager for West Africa, disclosed this in a dispatch sent to Nigeria Communicationsweek on Wednesday.
Kola-Ogunlade, explained that President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to seek re-election at the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) National Executive Committee meeting held in Abuja on Monday top the search trend.
He noted that the “declaration came as a surprise to members of the APC and has also sparked controversial talks by concerned Nigerians on the implications of the President’ seeking a second term.
“Nigerians took to Google to confirm the President’s declaration.“
The Google manager said that another issue that trended on Google search was the 3-0 defeat of Barcelona by Roma.
According to him, “Barcelona superstar, Lionel Messi and other club members expressed disappointment at their 3-0 defeat to Italian football club, Roma, at the ongoing UEFA Champions League matches.”
The loss eliminates Barcelona from the competition and puts Roma in the semi-final, making them the third team in Champions League history to overturn a first-leg defeat of three goals or more.
“Football fans in Nigeria raced to Google for more highlights of the match, making ‘Roma vs Barcelona’ a top trending search term.” he stated
Kola-Ogunlade, said that the highly anticipated annual professional wrestling event ‘Wrestlemania’, which took place on April 8 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, trended on Google search.
He noted that the 2018 edition of the pay-per-view (PPV) event was the thirty-fourth annual Wrestlemania event and was watched by thousands of fans around the world.
“Wrestlemania is also referred to as the Superbowl of Wrestling.
“Nigerians searched Google for results, recap and grades, making ‘Wrestlemania 2018’ a top trending search term.”
Another issue that trended on Google search according to him was the demise of Raymond Colin Wilkins, an English football player and coach who died after suffering a heart attack last week at the age of 61.
He noted that “Football clubs across Europe this week paid tribute to late Raymond Colin Wilkins.
Wilkins, played for Chelsea, Manchester United and Queens Park Rangers during his 24-year football career, also captained his country at international games that saw him win 84 caps for England.
“Football fans in Nigeria took to Google search to read more about Wilkins’ football career and achievement.” he added
Kola-Ogunlade, said that the report that about One hundred cases of IBS are reported yearly in Nigeria made Nigerians to go to Google search to read more about it.
“Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the large intestine.
“One hundred cases of IBS are reported yearly in Nigeria.
“In the quest to stay healthy and eat right, Ragnhild Undseth's PhD dissertation sheds light on the mysteries of irritable bowel syndrome.
“Interested Nigerians went to Google search to read more of Undseth's dissertation about irritable bowel syndrome and how food ferments in their intestines.”
