Mr. Kevin Caruso, managing director/CEO of Nigeria Telecommunications Plc (Nitel), has said that the appointment of a new board for the national carrier became imperative to enhance the operations of the company in line with the federal government’s directive to get the first national carrier ready for a new core investor by the end of this year
"As a matter of fact, the primary aim of the new management of Nitel is to focus on how to improve on the services it provides Nigerians. I hope you are aware that Nitel presently provides services to different types of customers like GSM operators, private telephone operators and some private/government offices across the country."
"Let me tell you this, Nitel’s new management is poised for better service delivery. We will, in no distant time, work on our billing mechanism to help us track those owing the company; those who have nothing to offer Nitel."
"In the next one week, we will come out with a blue print for our short term strategy to restore the backbone of the network transmission before we move to land lines and micro wave lines," Caruso explained.
It would be recalled that recently, Transcorp embarked on fresh moves aimed at repositioning Nitel. One of the moves is the suspension of Nitel top management team as well as the halting of all financial transactions. Three weeks ago, it appointed a new MD/CEO in the person of Kevin Caruso who has promised to bring Nitel back to life within three months.
In a statement signed by Alhaji Mohammed Bubba, Transcorp’s secretary, he says "in view of the criticality of the need to reposition Nitel and in order to ensure timely execution, it is imperative that both the board and management of Nitel align on the goals and processes for achieving set targets."
The four-member board includes Tom Isegholi, chairman of the new board who also doubles as the group managing director (GMD) of Transcorp; Alhaji Sayya Dantata, Mr. Olorogun Otega and Kevin Caruso.
Meanwhile, the new management is led by Caruso. Other management team members include Hajia Zainab Sa’ad, chief marketing officer, Gbenga Olaleye, human resources and Pai Gambi, head of employees’ services.
