ACER, HP, Toshiba and Zinox, leading international Original Equipment Manufactures (OEMs) in Nigeria have come out strong under the Computerize Nigeria Project to inject 750,000 laptops into the country at low costs aimed at making more Nigerians have access to computer.
CNP explained the exercise was primarily aimed at enhancing computer ownership, information technology competencies and increased productivity on national level.
The computers which were endorsed by Microsoft, world leading software company, would empower civil servants (Federal, states and local governments), staff of organized private sector, staff of military and para-military organizations, students and staff of educational institutions and cooperatives.
The programme, the statement noted, will ease out the problems of the many computer ownership or purchasing schemes in the market today.
According to Mrs. Vivian Abii,  chief executive officer “ This addresses the often expressed consumer desire to have a wide range of brand choices from which to choose, as traditionally, an OEM would offer only its own brand in its ownership scheme. The Computerize Nigeria Project has broken all the barriers of competition and the OEMs ACER, HP, Toshiba, and Zinox are offered to consumers under one promo at prices hitherto unmatched. “
She said some of the benefits in the scheme included no bank guarantees which she explained brought an end to the tedious documentation and the frustration accompanying some other projects of this sort.
“Consumers enjoy value for money whether they pay in cash or take advantage of the flexible payment terms with interests below bank prevailing rates,” Abii said, adding that the result is that the 750,000 laptops scheme has made laptops cheaper and easier to purchase while encouraging the growth of a credit culture in the economy. “That was the ultimate aim for this partnership between leading OEMs in Nigeria.”
Charles Igboa, country sales representative for ACER,   was quoted as saying that ACER’s participation in the 750,000 laptops programme underscored the company’s commitment to empower the  people.
He explained that ACER, like the other participating OEMs has made substantial discounts to bring prices down because of the belief that this would help break the barrier between technology and people, while urging Nigerians to take advantage of the unique incentive.
According to Simeon Gotley, business manager, West Africa, Toshiba,  this was an opportunity for Toshiba to make remarkable contributions to Nigeria , saying that the timing of the promo signified the conviction of the OEMs that only appropriate technology can help Nigeria to survive the on-going global economic crisis.
CNP as a pioneer of computer discount and ownership scheme in Nigeria has been in the fore front of the promotion of digital knowledge democracy in Nigeria and has over the years achieved multiple successes in the computerization of schools, offices and homes.
