Men of the Courier Regulatory Department of the Nigerian Postal Service (Nipost) last week in Abuja had a successful clampdown on four illegal courier operators operating at the domestic wing office complex of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
During a press briefing in Lagos after the exercise, Dr Simon Emeje, head of the Courier Regulatory Department gave the names of the fake courier companies as Abmat Services Ventures, Dominion Express Cargo, Nuel Air System Services and Numaweh Cargo Services Limited and said the companies had never at any point in time applied for licenses to operate courier business and thereby operated illegally.
Documents and receipts signifying deep indulgent of the four companies in logistics and courier business were recovered from the fake courier companies and showed to journalists at the press briefing.
Emeje recounted the changing nature of activities of illegal courier operators who keep on strategizing their mode of operations to make sure that they remain in business. He said that at least about seventy of such operators have been arrested since his department was carved out from Nipost and made to supervise the activities of the postal and courier sector.
He also informed that the activities of the illegal operators undermine the profit margin made by operators in the postal business even as he also said that such activities rob the government of huge money as revenue.
Emeje advised people sending their shipments to be weary of fake courier operators as they risk their shipments or consignment being dumped or being stolen by these operators who don’t have any integrity to protect. He advised people sending their messages through the courier to always ask for operator’s license before they send their parcels through such a courier company.
It would be recalled that the activities of illegal courier operators are becoming so disturbing that Mori Baba , the postmaster general of the federation through his representative in a book presentation on courier held in Lagos, a fortnight ago vowed to support the fight against illegal courier operators. Courier Regulatory Department is an arm of the Nipost and for successful fight against fake courier operators, there is need for cooperation among the stakeholders. In this regard, Emeje has asked end users of courier products to report any suspected illegal courier operator to his department for necessary action.
