The Courier Regulatory Department (CRD) of Nigerian Postal Service (Nipost) has arrested six illegal courier operators in a renewed clamp down on unregistered courier companies, Nigeria CommunicationsWeek has learnt.
The operators were arrested in Benin City, Edo state in a raid carried out by the CRD in collaboration with the Nigerian Police.
Dr. Simon Emeje, senior assistant postmaster general and head of CRD, said the combined team identified and closed down four outlets in different places in the city, and also arrested six illegal operators who have been handed over to the Police for prosecution.
The shut firms include Alhaji Munkaila Maiduguri at 40, Sokpomba Road, beside Mosgroovy Religious Gift Shop, Benin City, who collects parcels and other consignments from prospective clients, records only the name and telephone numbers of recipients then send these items to contact persons in Spain. Others are Afenmai Line Limited (A Transport Company) at Igbinedion House, 89, Akpakpava junction, by Dawson junction, Benin City, said to engage in deliveries to Auchi area and its environs, and AB Motors by AP Filling Station, Akpakpava, Benin City, also a transport company that specializes in carrying and delivering parcels and other consignments to Sabon Gida Ora and its environs.
Nigeria CommunicationsWeek gathered that the last of the four outlets is a special one at shop 4, 42, Sokpomba Road, Benin City. The illegal courier operator also operates as a Bureau de change with a lady who sits by the right side of the shop and process parcels going to Italy.
Dr. Emeje said that exhibits recovered from the raid include; dozens of parcels collected for both dispatch and delivery, used airway bills, notebooks used for recording in and out, receipt booklets, controlled delivery parcels, marked currency notes, and ledger diaries.
