Arising from three days of intense deliberations, participants at the just concluded e-Nigeria summit have urged the federal government to bring all ICT agencies under one umbrella for proper co-ordination, Nigeria CommunicationsWeek can now reveal.
The summit also recommended that the requisite political will must be accorded the implementation of the ICT4D Plan at the highest level of government and that appropriate legislations should be promulgated by the National Assembly to institutionalize the ICT4D plan in order to drive the vision 20:2020.
Organized by National Information Technology Development Agency (Nitda), e-Nigeria was to create awareness and present the document to all Nigerians in order to aid the use of information technology in every sector on Nigerian economy.
Nigeria CommunicationsWeek gathered that the participants acknowledged the government’s funding of the ICT sector but called for increased budgetary allocation to the sector as a way of improving ICT development in the country.
“Government and the organized private sector should empower the youths by establishing ICT centres in the rural and urban areas as well as difficult terrains particularly the Niger Delta region” the participants also said.
The summit also noted the efforts of government on e-commence in the country and called on the National Assembly to pass the bill when it comes before it while urging government to accelerate the coordination of the current efforts being made, to improve ICT infrastructure development with the aim of achieving the ICT4D objectives.
ICT4D plan is a developmental platform that could improve Nigeria as a knowledge-based economy and the Nigerian ICT4D was developed to drive critical sectors of Nigerian economy, the Seven-point Agenda and achievement of Vision 20-2020
