Ericsson Renovates Unilag Physics Lab

Ericsson Nigeria said that it has spent some N7 million on the renovation of the final year student Physics laboratory of the University of Lagos.

The Physics lab, with capacity for 120 students, had been in use for several years with minimal maintenance carried out due to inadequate funding, which resulted in its facilities suffering immense degradation.

In a statement,  Ericsson quoted the university’s authorities as applauding the generosity of the company as the keys of the recently refurbished lab were handed over to the institution.

Ericsson claimed that the refurbishment was in response to an appeal from the university’s Physics department, made to several organisations, to help reconstruct the dilapidated learning facilities ahead of the just commenced session.

The statement said, “The Department of Physics of the University of Lagos approached several organisations to help restore their laboratories, and Ericsson was one of the first organisations to respond, transforming the facility to a world-class Laboratory.

“The University of Lagos, in appreciation of the gesture, seized the occasion of its 50th anniversary celebration held in November to honour Ericsson with the Platinum Award, as one of its major donors of the year.”

Meanwhile, Ericsson’s other major social investments in Africa includes the development of Millennium Villages. In this project, Ericsson provides mobile broadband connectivity for voice and Internet access to rural communities creating a platform for economic enhancement, better education and even access to international health professional.

As at the end of 2011, more than 500,000 people throughout 11 countries in sub-Saharan Africa had benefitted from mobile connectivity as a result of the engagement in the Millennium Villages Project. At the end of 2011, over 90 per cent of the village clusters were connected.
