Experts Warn of Worsening Climate Change

The country is at greater risk of adverse climatic changes with direct impacts on biodiversity, agriculture, water resources, forests, and coastal areas unless the indiscriminate discarding of remains of unwanted electronic goods and appliances is checked, Nigeria CommunicationsWeek has learnt.
Segun Oludapo, director general, Lagos state Environmental Support Services, said that the challenges of climate change were real and that Lagosians should fight climate variation by ensuring that they do not engage in activities that are bound to generate more e-waste, like the importation of outdated products into the country.
Oludapo, who spoke at a climate change symposium in Lagos, advocated the need for the people to change their attitude towards the environment, noting that what was given to the environment is what it will return to the people.
He said, “Climate change is real. It has come to hit us back. There is need for attitudinal change to have a safe environment. The practice of littering the environment is bad, ditto the blockage of drainage channels”.
Segun Olulade, secretary general, Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria also, charged Lagos residents to always embrace the private sector participation initiative of the government for better waste disposal, to rid the state of dirt and environmental hazards.
Olulade cautioned residents against patronizing cart pushers, noting that most of them do not empty their wastes at designated dumpsites but on roads and on drains, which he said obstructs free flow of water whenever it rains.
However, he disclosed that over 10,000 metric tones of waste is generated in Lagos state alone on a daily basis.
