George Uriesi, managing director/chief executive officer, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), will be conferred with the prestigious National Productivity Order of Merit (NPOM) award by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on Thursday.

The event which will take place at the NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja will also witness the conferment of the award to other notable Nigerians who have made significant contributions to the development of the country, in their various fields of endeavour.

Uriesi is being recognized, with this award, because of the significant improvement he has brought into the management of Nigerian airports since his appointment as the managing director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria in October 2011.

His unique management style, which has given the staff of the Authority unprecedented sense of belonging to the Authority, has enhanced service delivery at all airports managed by FAAN.

Yakubu Dati, general manager, Corporate Communications (FAAN),  said that this is aside from his transparent commitment to the implementation of Government’s Transformation Agenda in the aviation industry, including infrastructural development, through the Airport Remodelling Project and other new policies such as Aerotropolis and perishable cargo export, through designated cargo airports in the country.

Uriesi holds a BA (Hons) degree of the then Bendel State (now Ambrose Alli) University, Ekpoma and began his working career at ADC Airlines, after his NYSC at the then Nigerian Airports Authority in 1992.

He left ADC Airline in 1996 to join multinational consumer products company, Proctor and Gamble, South Africa, as Products Supply Manager.

He returned to the aviation industry in 1999 when he joined the executive team of the South African Civil Aviation Authority, where he rose to become general manager, Aviation Safety.

He joined the Airports Company of South Africa in 2001 as group manger for Safety and Compliance and rose to the position of general manger, Cape Town International Airport in 2004 where he led the massive transformation of the airport in preparation for 2010 FIFA World Cup hosted by South Africa.

Uriesi returned to Nigeria in January 2010 to take up appointment as FAAN’s Director of Airport Operations from where he was appointed MD/CEO of FAAN in October, 2011.
