ThinQThanQ, the research and database unit of financialtechnology, Africa’s leading financial services technology publication has ranked Babatunde Raji Fashola, executive governor of Lagos State as the governor with the highest social media presence in Nigeria.

The research was conducted using the twitter presence of governors and the rankings were given according to the number of followers each governor had.

Fashola had 58,935 followers as at the time the research was conducted.

The governor of Ekiti state came after with about 3,943 followers, about 54,000 less, and Rauf Aregbesola, governor of Osun state came third with about 3,883 followers.

Segun Mimiko, governor of Ondo state was fourth with 1,783 followers and Rotimi Amaechi, governor of Rivers state came fifth with 1,650 followers.

Fayemi has the highest number of tweets, according to the research results with 1,989 tweets, followed closely by Fashola with 1,701 tweets. Amosun followed with 1,063 tweets, Uduaghan followed with 871 tweets, Ajimobi and Imoke have 471 and 430 tweets respectively.

Of the 37 state heads including the Federal Capital territory, only 23 have twitter account. These include the top five earlier highlighted above and the Cross River, Kwara, Imo, Delta, Enugu, Bayelsa, Nassarawa, Benue, Akwa Ibom, Plateau, Gombe, Anambra state governors along with the FCT minister of state.

The first three governors topping the chart are ACN members. Other 14 state governors are not on twitter, about 90 per cent of these consist mostly governors from the northern states and the Middle Belt.

Going by the number of tweets, the research shows that governors are beginning to utilise the social media platform and increasingly looking up to Twitter, perhaps, over Facebook and other media as a preferred social media channel for communicating with the people.
