In line with the government’s three-point agenda for human capital development, security and infrastructural development, the Delta State government has partnered with the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology in training 100 children on computer appreciation.
The children, selected on equal gender basis from public schools in the North Senatorial District of the state, had one-week course geared towards the promotion of science and technology in the state at the Ogwashi-Uku Polytechnic. The government has also promised that the programme will be extended to children from the Central and South Senatorial Districts.
These disclosures were made by Gov. Emmanuel Uduaghan in Warri when he declared open a two-week training programme for tenants of the Technology Incubation Centre (TIC) and freelance scientists, innovators and inventors.
Themed ‘Developing a Knowledge-Based Economy through Science and Technology,’ the training was facilitated by the Directorate of Science and Technology in the governor’s Office.
Representing the governor, Hon. Ronald Eyime, commissioner for science and technology, promised that his administration would continue to show keen interest in the development of science and technology owing to the pivotal role they play in sustaining growth and development. He pointed out that it was in support of science and technology that his administration, at the beginning, created the Directorate of Science and Technology "to champion the cause of not only attaining, but also fast tracking technological and industrial growth and development".
In his remarks, Chief Gabriel Mabiaku, the Iyasere of Warri and chairman of TIC lamented that the centre had been lying under-utilized with a few inmates while "we are suffering in silence with our highly talented graduates roaming the streets."
"Let us embrace what government has done by putting the place to optimal use," he appealed.
The committee he chairs, he disclosed, has the best brains from the State University, Abraka, the Petroleum Training Institute, the Polytechnic in Otefe-Oghara and seasoned businesspersons and bankers. He called on all to see the training as an avenue to de-emphasise
