National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), has given a seven-day ultimatum to importers of grains across the country to certify their products or face sanctions.
This is coming against worries that genetically modified grains and crops otherwise GMOs have flooded markets in the country.
GMOs are food made in labs and crops and animals genetically engineered to grow faster and better.
Rufus Egbegba, director general, NBMA, said it has become necessary to regulate the importation of GMOs in order to check the influx of uncertified genetically modified grains and crops into the country.
Egbegba insisted that the agency is not going to get involved in the trade war between biotech and agrochemical companies, as its only concern is to ensure human and environmental safety.
The agency however said it is working in synergy with NAFDAC to ensure that only certified genetically modified products are found in store shelves across the country.
Recall that in December last year, also said that a total of 90,000 metric tons of Genetically Modified (GM) maize has been smuggled into the country.
Most genetically engineered foods on the market today have no consumer benefits whatsoever; they are engineered to survive pesticides, and have greatly accelerated the use of pesticides such as glyphosate, dicamba and soon 2,4D, creating what environmental groups call a dangerous pesticide treadmill.
