Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure services provider, Galaxy Backbone has signed on to MainOne undersea Cable to deliver Data, Internet, Voice and Video services to its customers via its integrated Fibre, Radio and VSAT domestic networks.
Mr. Gerald Ilukwe, managing director of Galaxy Backbone, said that, Galaxy Backbone is really excited about the partnership with MainOne Cable especially with the successful commercial launch of the submarine fibre optic cable by the company. “This will definitely enable Galaxy deliver enhanced quality of data, internet, voice and video services to its primary customers, the federal public sector made up of the MDAs and then the state governments,” he said.
Ilukwe further stated that, Galaxy Backbone which is owned by the Federal Government operate as a customer-centric organization based on a growth strategy that enables her to make viable investment decisions by taking advantage of the availability of cutting-edge technology to consistently improve and hopefully exceed the expectations of her customers with qualitative services and innovative customer care approach. Thus, Galaxy Backbone is probably the first public sector ICT firm to sign a service partnership agreement with MainOne since 2009.
According to Ilukwe, Galaxy Backbone made the decision to go into service partnership with MainOne cable after a diligent consideration of the obvious limitations of existing submarine cable services in the country and the opportunities that will be thrown up by the entrance into the market of two or more submarine cable operators.
It is important to note also that, there is a significant alignment of the corporate visions of Galaxy Backbone and MainOne in terms of their futuristic footprints on the Africa continent; MainOne’s vision is to expand the much needed broadband capacity on the African continent and reduce costs of broadband communications across the continent, while Galaxy Backbone has the vision to be the leading enabler of digital inclusion in Nigeria and Africa.
The MainOne submarine cable system is a $240m private sector investment that has implemented a submarine cable network of over 7,000 km linking Nigeria and the rest of the world through Portugal. The company had to articulate a value proposition that shows clear advantages that a service partnership with MainOne will deliver in terms of achieving over 80% savings for its customers over next 15 years and improving quality of services.
Galaxy Backbone is a Government owned company whose primary mandate is the provision of ICT Infrastructure and other transversal services to Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Government. Presently, the company has connected over 250 Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government to its network, with over 2,500 remote sites across the country and rolling out a metro-wide fibre optic network within the FCT, Abuja.
Ilukwe assured that, “this partnership will have a significant positive impact on the attainment of the ICT sectoral objectives and by extension the overarching goals of the Nigerian Vision 20: 2020 strategy”.
