Finally, the big bang is here and it is Globacom, a Nigerian company with pan-African outlook.
A fortnight ago, Globacom won a licence in a tender auction to operate mobile cellular service in Ghana - just a week after the company launched its services in Benin.
The company is also currently bidding for a license in Togo.
The news is delightful particularly now that West African telecommunications market is dominated by foreign operators who also owe commitments mostly to their parent nations.
All that appears to be changing with Globacom’s imprints in West African countries who would also be treated with the same bouquet of packages and world class customer care.
Since it launched its services on August 29, 2003, Glo Mobile, the mobile arm of Globacom has been at the forefront of revolutionary changes in the GSM sector in Nigeria and is now the fastest growing GSM network in Africa.
While vigorously pursuing its expansion strategy, Glo has earned the identity of the Nigerian innovator because it boasts a wide variety of innovative packages and tariff plans designed to fulfill the needs of a broad spectrum of market segments in Nigeria.
This is has been the major aim of Dr Michael Adeniyi Agbolade Isola Adenuga, chief prompter of Globacom and a man synonymous with success.
Anonymous yet larger than life, Adenuga is a mixture of myth and reality. His mind ticks like clock.
Adenuga, a tireless perfectionist, business whiz kid, jack of all thriving trade and philanthropist is a study of patriotism and spirit of good neighbourliness of countries around Nigeria.
Adenuga attributed the company’s success story in Nigeria to its "network quality, pocket-friendly tariffs, innovative products and services and life-transforming promotions, which had endeared the network to the people and governments of other countries."
Nigeria should recognize now and honour him for his immense contribution to societal growth.
Companies in Nigeria should venture outside the shores of country as positive image laundry tool to show that some of the world’s best are also Nigerians.
Adenuga should also endow chairs in institutions to raise future founders of companies like Globacom or his other lucrative businesses.
Government should create the enabling environment that will also help other smaller companies attain the status of mega corporation with chains of operations in various countries
