How Facebook is Using Robotics to Expand Connectivity, Targets 1 billion People Online

Facebook on Thursday unveiled new connectivity technologies that will bring the next billion people online and enhance existing infrastructure projects.

Since 2013, Facebook Connectivity has helped bring more than 500M people online to a faster internet and now aims to enable affordable, high-quality connectivity for the next billion people with emerging technologies.

Commenting on the new connectivity technologies, Dan Rabinovitsj, VP of Facebook Connectivity said, “ We have seen that economies flourish when there is widely accessible internet for individuals and businesses.

“In Nigeria, increased broadband connectivity resulted in a 7.8 percent increase in the likelihood of employment for people in areas connected to fiber optic cables.

“While increased connectivity led to a 19 percent increase in GDP per capita in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Facebook Connectivity works with partners to develop new technologies for access to high speed internet.

“Today we’re sharing the latest developments on some of these connectivity technologies, which aim to deliver major improvements in internet capacity across the world by sea, land, and air.”

Some of Facebook’s new connectivity technologies include:

Investment in improving subsea fiber optic cables and expanding their reach to better connect more people. Facebook and its partners recently launched the first-ever transatlantic, 24 fiber pair subsea cable system which will connect Europe to the U.S. This new cable provides 200 times more capacity than the transatlantic cables of the 2000s and builds on Facebook’s recent news about 2Africa Pearls, the subsea cable which connects Africa, Asia, and Europe and makes the 2Africa cable system the longest in the world, with a capacity to provide connectivity for up to 3 billion people.

Using robotics for faster fibe deployment. We are making fiber deployment significantly more economical through Bombyx, a robot that can climb the medium voltage power lines that already exist in so much of the world, and install fiber onto them. Today, Bombyx is lighter, faster, and more agile than our first generation design. We are also making Bombyx fully autonomous, using machine vision sensors to better navigate around obstacles. Bombyx aims to make the single biggest drop in the cost of terrestrial fiber deployment by combining innovations in the fields of robotics and fiber-optic cable design to increase the amount of terrestrial fiber on land — without  the expense of trenching to lay fiber underground.

Terragraph: Fiber connections through the air- Terragraph, a wireless solution which beams fiber-like connectivity through the air, has already brought high-speed internet to more than 6,500 homes in Anchorage, Alaska and deployment has started in Perth, Australia. We license Terragraph for free to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). To date, these partners have shipped more than 30,000 Terragraph units to more than 100 service providers and system integrators around the world.

Glo Subscribers to Get Ample Bonus on e-top up Recharges

Telecommunications and digital solutions company, Globacom, is giving 15% bonus airtime on every E-top-up transaction. Customers who use digital airtime recharge services are best placed to take advantage of this interesting new offer.

Globacom clarified in a press release released in Lagos that the promotion, which began on February 13, is exclusively accessible to specific prepaid Glo users.

The company noted that in line with its commitment to delivering exceptional value to customers, “we have introduced this bonus airtime promotion to help our customers get the most out of their mobile experience. Whether the airtime is used for calls, data, or messaging, this extra boost ensures that customers stay connected with their loved ones and colleagues without interruption. It was introduced to give our esteemed customers unprecedented value for money and a delightful calling experience on the Glo network”.

Glo is offering the 15% airtime incentive on recharges as part of the company’s package to bring more excitement to the daily lives of millions of Nigerians on the Glo E-top up platform. “The validity of the airtime is 7 days and cannot be rolled over; once the bonus airtime is not used within validity period, it expires and the customer forfeits the bonus”, Globacom explained.

FG, ITU Seek Global Action on Submarine Cable Disruptions

To prevent damage and disruptions to submarine communication cables, which are essential to the global digital economy, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is calling on the international community to work together and take collective action.

Doreen Bogdan-Martin, secretary general of ITU, made the call during the opening ceremony of the ITU International Submarine Cable Resilience inaugural summit hosted by Nigeria in Abuja.

The summit is being attended by more than 300 delegates from the 194 ITU-member countries across the world.

She said that at the moment, the digital economy accounted for the greater parts of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and it is expected to peak at 16.5 trillion dollars by 2028.

Bogdan-Martin underscored the need for global attention and focus on measures that would sustain the spate of rapid development in the digital economy sector, with submarine cable connectivity accounting for 95 percent of its backbone.

“The past two decades have seen a vast digital shift, with new socio-economic opportunities as well as challenges. Since the 2005 World Summit on the increasing society, the number of internet users back then in 2005 stood at one billion.

“At the end of last year, we had 5.5 billion internet users. And today, the global digital economy is growing faster than global GDP and is expected to reach 16.5 trillion U.S. dollars by 2028.

“Over the next decade, some estimate that more than two-thirds of the new value creation could come from digitally enabled companies,” the ITU boss said.

She noted that “as our economies and digital innovations grow, and as we seek to bring meaningful connectivity to all, so does our reliance on digital infrastructure like submarine cables.

“This global undersea network is emblematic of the innovation and the investment required to connect the world meaningfully,” Bogdan-Martin said.

The Secretary General lamented that despite the resilience of submarine cables, about 200 disruptions are witnessed yearly, while fixing them across continents and countries is difficult and slow.

According Bogdan-Martin, the global economy always feel the impact of submarine cable cuts and disruptions, stressing that

“Submarine cables are put in place by an interplay of technology, business, and policy that has to be considered holistically.”

“That’s why this summit includes a diversity of stakeholders that are essential to this conversation,” the ITU boss added.

She commended Nigeria for hosting the event and called on the ITU Advisory Body, the academic community, and other stakeholders to work towards a lasting solution to the challenges of underwater cable cuts and disruptions across the globe.

Prof. Sandra Maximiano, Co-chair of the Advisory Board for ITU, underscored the importance of the International Advisory Board for Submarine Cable Business and Economy at the Summit, saying that positive developments have been witnessed in the industry.

“It is no coincidence that we are meeting here in Abuja today, given that several cable cuts occurred in March last year affecting multiple countries in West Africa, including Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, and Senegal.

“This incident highlighted the critical importance of subsea cable businesses in this region, with some estimates indicating that over 70 million customers were affected.

“While Nigeria is served by several submarine cable systems, many of which also land in my home country, Portugal, including Maniwari, the Africa coast to Europe, Etihanu, and to Africa, other Western African countries are served by only by a single submarine cable,” Maximiano said.

Dr. Bosun Tijani, minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy, who welcomed the ITU delegates to Nigeria, urged participants to take advantage of the hospitality of Nigeria.

On the issues of submarine cables, Dr. Tijani said, “This is not just a technical or industry-specific challenge. It is a global imperative that affects the financial market, trade, education, health systems, and even governance.”

He said, “In Nigeria, the government is investing in digital infrastructure for global access, broadband expansion, and economic transformation.

“Under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria is committed to strengthening its digital infrastructure and advancing policies that support connectivity, innovation, and economic growth.

“We are taking decisive steps as a nation to recognise and protect the government’s infrastructure as critical national infrastructure, aligning with our broader efforts to enhance digital resilience across all sectors.

“As a government, we are also deeply invested in leveraging digital property infrastructure, promoting global access, and expanding broadband penetration, ensuring that connectivity remains a catalyst for economic transformation and revolution.

“The outcomes of this summit will not only influence policy and investment decisions but also serve as the foundation for global cooperation and long-term resilience,” he added.

Google has unveiled Gemini Code Assist for individuals, a free version of their AI-coding assistant. This development assistant powered by Gemini 2.0 is now available to Nigerian developers and it supports all programming languages in the public domain and more importantly, it is optimised for coding.

Recent DORA research indicates that over 75% of developers now integrate AI into their daily workflows, underscoring its growing importance. At Google, for instance, over 25% of new code is AI-generated, subsequently validated by engineering teams.

While established enterprises readily deploy advanced AI tools to enhance developer productivity, access to these resources has historically been limited for students, independent developers, and emerging startups. Given the projected global developer base expansion to 57.8 million by 2028, democratising AI access is both timely and crucial.
