Prof. Cleopas Angaye, director-general, National Information and Technology Development (Nitda) has said that for Nigerian to actualize the set goals of making the country one of the largest economies in the world by the year 2020 that Information Technology must be a key driver.
He disclosed this at the inauguration of the local organizing committee of e-Nigeria summit in Abuja recently.
The D.G explained that ICT will be an important approach to be used in the realization of the Vision 2020, given the strategic importance of the sector and the economic plan of the country.
He said, although the concept was through collective implementation of the National ICT 4D strategy plan that was drawn by Nitda in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
According to him, e-Nigeria is a project that will focus on important issues concerning the technological image globally and its tremendous progress. He noted that Nigerians need to articulate how we have fared, what needs to be done particularly and getting the proper infrastructure in place to move the country forward.
Angaye said the need to drive Nigerian economy to be fully integrated into the global information society informed the decision of ICT4D plan.
Adeyinka Adeyemi, managing director,  Intermac Consulting  in his remark said, e-Nigeria project is a vehicle that would be used to promote development in ICT industry  and that  the use of ICT in the economic plan will be an efficient tool to bridge digital divide and accelerate economic growth of the country.
