Imode, Kwara Community’s Digital Literacy Centre, ICT Roadmap Unveiled
By peter oluka
In a tactical move to become a digitally smart community that delivers a decent living and respectable future to its people, irrespective of their social status, Imode Community in Oke-Ero Local Government Area of Kwara State has received a digital literacy centre donated by the illustrious sons and daughters of the land.
Imode Development Association (IDA) borrowing a leaf from the National Information Technology (NIT) Policy seeks to make the community dwellers, especially the youths, become IT complaint and ‘netizens’ in the information society by using IT as the engine for sustainable development and global competitiveness.
Speaking at the recent public presentation of the solar-powered excellent Digital Literacy Center (DiLiCe), equipped with modern ICT infrastructure to support the education and curiosity of every citizen within and around the community, Pastor Joseph Babatunde, the president, Imode Development Association (IDA), said that the projects: a modern IT centre and a school bus, were to assist the students imbibe the IT culture as the world has gone digital.
Babatunde said, “I recall with joy that the idea of provision of a modern IT Centre for our school came to me a couple of years ago when one of my children did the post-JAMB exam in University of Ilorin (Unilorin). The students were all given computers to do the exams. While she breezed through the exams, most of the other children were just starring at the device until the time was over. I felt challenged there and then, to give every child that needed opportunity”.
“IDA has done the little it can by providing the facilities. We want to see the impact through improved performances in all the exams of our students/pupils”.
Explaining the ‘Imode ICT Vision’, Reverend Sunday Folayan, IDA’s vice president, said that they are closers to achieving a digitally Smart Community. “This will be achieved by reliance on technology, carefully backed up with traditional methods that are functional. A significant number of indigenes will continue to live outside the community or the country, and their needs and requirements to stay connected to their roots will continue to inform the community’s development policies.
“ICT will be used to solve practical problems, such as educational deficiency as well as the security of lives and properties.
“Most aspects of the Community engagement activities will be conducted electronically towards widening access and participation especially with its citizens in the diaspora, using appropriate technologies.
“Members of the Community will come to accept a high standard of up-to-date facilities, ease-of-use and reliability, richness of information, integrated services and excellent support”, he explained.
The Imode Digital Literacy Center, Folayan added, will serve as a launch-pad for making the Community an ICT model in the state as well as the country developing local software and systems that preserves the language and culture of Imode people Providing technical support for the repair and maintenance of Communications equipment such as phones, tablets and computers within Imode Community and providing Internet access for both the DiLiCe and the Community.
The Paradigm Initiative (PI) works with the Association for training and capacity building, while the equipment in the centre were sourced entirely online through Konga.
According to Mr. Gbenga Sesan, the executive director at Paradigm Initiative (PI) and content partners on the project, said the initiative will birth huge impact if it’s well utilized.
Sesan was represented by Mr. Tosin Abolaji, a program manager at PI, who said, “The facility is primarily setup for the youth in the community and we believe they won’t be denied the use of it. We will encourage the Association (IDA) to have a committee that will look into the management of the facility, design a program that will ensure that the youth are regularly/constantly trained, even use the facility as a source of generating fund for the school and community by making it a resource centre. Neighboring communities can subscribe to the usage of the facility and pay stipends. The list of possibilities goes on and on but what is very important is a strong management”.
“It’s a welcome development and we encourage such in every community. Technology is now a necessity not a luxury and no one should be denied of the privilege. Our work at Paradigm Initiative is around youth and community development; that makes us connect more with the Imode Community Digital Literacy Centre project. The youth of Imode Community will no longer be denied the opportunities that come with ICT”.
Professor Mike Abiodun, chairman, IDA’s Education Committee, said, “Let’s agree that that the community has done a very good job, by setting up an ICT Centre and it’s important to understand that education is a collaborative venture.
“The government cannot do it alone; the same thing applies to the schools and parents. It has to be collaborative between the government, the community and parents. “We are in the ICT age; if you are not computer literate it will be difficult to contribute effectively. So, the community thinks that if our children must go higher in life, then it becomes necessary. With the calibre of persons that we have that will handle the kids; we believe that the students will take full advantage of it.
The solar-powered DiLiCe fully equipped with 40 laptops, printer, internet connectivity, and other facilities, was presented to the Community’s Primary and Secondary Schools with the representatives of the State and local governments, lawmakers, educational bodies and the traditional ruler, the Onimode of Imode, Oba Joseph Dada, among other dignitaries.
Wale Abegunde, education secretary, Oke-Ero, LGA, Kwara State, said “I am super excited about this initiative because it will relieve the government the burden of developing an IT Centre in Imode Community.
“Surprisingly, this people have done it and it is the responsibility of the government. They see it as part of their efforts to add value to the community development. Other community development associations should borrow a leaf from IDA”.
Excited by the projects, the Principal, Imode Community Senior Secondary School, Mr. Raheem Adebiyi, said “Everything is done online these days and I believe that our registration is going to be made easier because students don’t need to go the café to register again.
“This initiative was developed by IDA, when I initially heard about it; I was elated because it’s going to help our students a lot in their career”.
Imode ICT Roadmap
IDA established the Imode Digital Literacy Center (DiLiCe), to enhance the teaching of ICT in the Community schools and cater for those who want to avail themselves of ICT education. DiLiCe will:
Be the rally point for digital literacy in the community, organize Training programs on computer appreciation and usage for pupils, students and the different categories of staff, and Be the testbed for digital ideas within the community.
Ultimately, the goal, as contained in the ICT roadmap is to ensure deployment of ICT for teaching, learning, and community development. Thus, ICT will be used to solve practical problems, such as educational deficiency as well as the security of lives and properties.
“Most aspects of the Community engagement activities will be conducted electronically towards widening access and participation especially with its citizens in the diaspora, using appropriate technologies.
“Members of the Community will come to expect a high standard of up-to-date facilities, ease-of-use and reliability, richness of information, integrated services and excellent support.
“The DILICE will allow members of the Community, who have their own portable computers, tablets and mobile phones to also communicate using the Community Infrastructure. This means that the Network Infrastructure strategy will not only focus on access but also on information and data security”, Rev’ Folayan pointed out during the presentation.
The Centre, is surely going to promote digital literacy and eLeaning in the various schools within the community, as Imode Development Association has pledged that its people must have access to resources such as Computers, Network resources and the Internet at all times, whether in the DiLiCe or in their various homes.

Google Rolls Out AI-Powered Theft Detection for Android 15
Thembi Alfreds was driving home from a soccer match in Johannesburg when she stopped at a traffic light. A thief suddenly appeared and smashed the window of her car, grabbing her phone. She struggled with the thief but they managed to get away with the phone.
The incident left her feeling violated and unsafe. Not only did she lose personal memories, like photos of her children, but her personal and financial information stored on the phone was now compromised.
Phone theft is a serious concern in many countries across Africa, including South Africa, where Thembi’s situation highlights the need for better phone theft solutions.
Smartphone usage is on the rise in Sub-Saharan Africa, with adoption rates reaching 61% in Kenya, 31% in Uganda, and 24-25% in Rwanda and Burundi. This increased uptake has been accompanied by a rise in cellphone theft, as these devices become attractive targets for criminals due to their resale value and sensitive data within. This poses a significant challenge that can have serious consequences for both individuals and businesses in the region.
According to the GSMA Consumer Survey 2023, 19% of mobile phone users in South Africa experienced theft or loss of their device in the past year. The GSMA reports millions of devices stolen every year, and the numbers continue to grow. With our phones becoming increasingly more valuable & central to storing sensitive data, like payment information and personal details, losing one can be an unsettling experience.
Phone theft can be a traumatic experience, but there are steps that can be taken to reduce the risk and protect personal information. That’s why we have developed and thoroughly beta tested, a full suite of features designed to protect you and your data at every stage – before, during, and after device theft.
These advanced theft protection features are now available to users around the world through Android 15 and a Google Play Services update (Android 10+ devices).
Theft Detection Lock uses powerful AI to proactively protect you at the moment of a theft attempt. By using on-device machine learning, Theft Detection Lock is able to analyze various device signals to detect potential theft attempts. If the algorithm detects a potential theft attempt on your unlocked device, it locks your screen to keep thieves out.To protect your sensitive data if your phone is stolen, Theft Detection Lock uses device sensors to identify theft attempts.
This feature is rolling out gradually to ensure compatibility with various devices, starting today with Android devices that cover 90% of active users worldwide. Check your theft protection settings page periodically to see if your device is currently supported.
In addition to Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock protects you if a thief tries to take your device offline to extract data or avoid a remote wipe via Android’s Find My Device. If an unlocked device goes offline for prolonged periods, this feature locks the screen to ensure your phone can’t be used in the hands of a thief.
If your Android device is lost or stolen, Remote Lock can quickly help you secure it. Even if you can’t remember your Google account credentials in the moment of theft, you can use any device to visit Android.com/lock and lock your phone with just a verified phone number. Remote Lock secures your device while you regain access through Android’s Find My Device – which lets you secure, locate or remotely wipe your device. As a security best practice, we always recommend backing up your device on a continuous basis, so remotely wiping your device is not an issue.
These features are now available on most Android 10+ devices via a Google Play Services update and must be enabled in settings.
Advanced security to deter theft before it happens
Android 15 introduces new security features to deter theft before it happens by making it harder for thieves to access sensitive settings, apps, or reset your device for resale:
- Changes to sensitive settings like Find My Device now require your PIN, password, or biometric authentication.
- Multiple failed login attempts, which could be a sign that a thief is trying to guess your password, will lock down your device, preventing unauthorized access.
- And enhanced factory reset protection makes it even harder for thieves to reset your device without your Google account credentials, significantly reducing its resale value and protecting your data.
Later this year, we’ll launch Identity Check, an opt-in feature that will add an extra layer of protection by requiring biometric authentication when accessing critical Google account and device settings, like changing your PIN, disabling theft protection, or accessing Passkeys from an untrusted location. This helps prevent unauthorized access even if your device PIN is compromised.
Real-world protection for billions of Android users
By integrating advanced technology like AI and biometric authentication, we’re making Android devices less appealing targets for thieves to give you greater peace of mind. These theft protection features are just one example of how Android is working to provide real-world protection for everyone. We’re dedicated to working with our partners around the world to continuously improve Android security and help you and your data stay safe.
You can turn on the new Android theft features by clicking here on a supported Android device. Learn more about our theft protection features by visiting our help center.

“As a government, we understand that agriculture development depends on more than just traditional practices. It requires us to embrace technology, foster collaboration and create sustainable practices that endure.
“I want to commend particularly the creation of the Lagos Agrinnovation Club. This club is not just an initiative, it has become a community of young agriprenuers, a hub of creativity and a platform for those who dare to reimagine agriculture.
“This year’s Agrithon saw 316 business case entries from dynamic startups, championed by young people who are driven by their vision to transform agriculture and build sustainable solutions.
The 26 finalists we honour today have not only made it through a rigorous selection process but have also shown us that the future of food in Lagos is brought. His words; “It’s very important for founders to understand that you are not a celebrity, when you raise funds, use it for the business that it was meant for.”
Afolabi who is a serial entrepreneur, noted that it was necessary for young founders to embody discipline when it came to work, addding that this was contributing to the demise of many young startups in the country.
Corroborating his thoughts, Aisha Raheem, the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Farmz2u, noted the importance of plan and vision.
