Independence and Nigeria’s ICT

"A comfortable old age is the reward of a well-spent youth. Instead of it bringing sad and melancholy prospects of decay, it would give us hopes of eternal youth in a better world" Maurice Chevalier.

Independence Day holds great significance for Nigeria because it is time to reflect on some of the defining moments in national history.

On Wednesday, October1, Nigeria turned 48 and while government rolled out the drums to celebrate, millions of Nigerians sat without jobs, access to healthcare and without security.

To make matters worse, public power supply has remained at best epileptic with cost of best necessities beyond the reach of the common man.

Almost all spheres of the national economy are under monstrous grip. From agriculture to manufacturing, to stock market and to ICT; the economy is in ugly shape requiring serious underpinning for survival.

For instance, in the ICT sector, apart from the steady progress in telecommunications, other sub-sectors have hobbled by lingering public power crisis, corruption, and poor macroeconomic management.

48 years after independence, Nigeria is still at the outskirts of information and communications technology, no thanks to lack of concerted investment in the academia and research activities.

The educational system is also busy producing graduates without the requisite knowledge and some who have not touched the computer let alone operate one.

As first step to addressing Nigeria’s slow match towards ICT development, there is need to review and develop a new ICT policy as well as chart ICT action plan/roadmap for the nation.

It is also important to have seasoned technocrats at the helm of ICT ministries and parastatals and not politicians who know little or nothing about current development in the sector.

Again, this is the time government needs to sit down and address once and for all, the protracted problems of obsolete syllabus and learning tools for Nigerian graduates; to make them functional in modern day environment.

The issue of public power supply should also be addressed to put the ICT industry on clear pedestal of growth so as to contribute to national development.

Government and corporate bodies should organize science and technology summer camps for students.

Nigeria should avoid the mismatch of policies and streamline IT development viz–a-viz technology convergence while avoiding disjointed focus on the key agencies.

Telecoms operators including MTN, Airtel and Globacom have pushed for cost-reflective tariff in view of extant economic realities.

Telcos Ask NCC to Allow Them Hike Tariff

This was contained in a statement jointly released by the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) on Thursday.

The statement was co-signed by Gbenga Adebayo; chairman, ALTON and Tony Emoekpere, president, ATCON.

The telcos called upon the government to take decisive action in addressing the numerous challenges confronting the telecommunications industry.

The telcos said telecommunications infrastructure development requires substantial investments in network expansion, maintenance, and technology upgrades.

“Despite the adverse economic headwinds, the telecommunications industry remains the only industry yet to review its general service pricing framework upward in the last (11) years, primarily due to regulatory constraints.

“For a fully liberalized and deregulated sector, the current price control mechanism, which is not aligned with economic realities, threatens the industry’s sustainability and can erode investors’ confidence.

“ATCON and ALTON call upon the government to facilitate a constructive dialogue with industry stakeholders to address pricing challenges and establish a framework that balances consumers’ affordability with operators’ financial viability,” the statement partly read.

Regarding the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the telcos also said regulatory neutrality and independence are crucial to ensuring a thriving telecommunications sector.

“Statutory provisions lend credence to this notion, as a lack of an impartial regulator will lead to a failure to maintain public confidence in the objectivity and independence of its decisions,” the statement added.
