Juwah Urges Operators to Focus on Effective Service Delivery

Dr. Eugene Juwah, executive vice chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called on operators to be responsive to subscribers as well as provide a platform for the advancement of the Nigerian telecommunications market.
The EVC assured that the Commission will continue to encourage compliance to all regulations that will attribute to tariff reduction as well as continuing top foster competition by encouraging new entrants into the market.
Juwah urged telecommunications operators to do things that will improve the quality of services and discontinue those things that degrade the quality.
“The Commission expects all operators to be responsive to their subscribers because without them no operator will exist and sustain their services; apart from ensuring that the consumers receive acceptable level of quality in the services being offered to them, and they must be affordable”.
The EVC who said this when the members of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (Alton) paid him a courtesy visit reiterated that the mandate to safeguarding the interest of the consumers shall remain the commission’s priority.
 On the SIM Card registration, Juwah said the Commission is currently consulting with different levels of government with a view to articulating the best approach to registration of existing subscribers in the network.
“Service providers are mandated to continue with the registration of new subscribers; the Commission will soon make an appraisal of the progress made by the operating companies in registering the new subscribers”.
The NCC boss assured that the commission shall support the deployment of broadband infrastructure across the country while  pleading with States and local governments to protect and support the deployment of services for the benefit of their communities and citizens as according to him “these infrastructure are capital intensive, and where artificial barriers are created by State and local governments, it further degrades quality of service and escalates the cost of providing services borne by users”.
Earlier in his remark, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, the President of Alton said some of the challenges the association faces are that of Nesrea and environmental impact assessment audit report of BTS: multiple regulation of the industry; infrastructure challenges and support; closure of BTS by some State and local authorities; issues affecting quality services; and multiple taxation.
