Local Firm, Galaxy Wireless Signs $650M Satellite Deal

Galaxy Wireless Communications Limited, a broadband wireless technology integrator has confirmed a deal in excess of $650 million with O3B Networks Ltd to provide extra capacity on its existing G-MAX™ platforms currently in Abuja and Port Harcourt in preparation for its planned nationwide coverage of the G-MAXCLOUDTM.
Galaxy Wireless Communications’ G-MAXCLOUD™ provides IP connectivity and Broadband Wireless solutions based on emerging WiMAX, Smart Antenna and other new technologies.
Consequently, it has signed on O3b Networks Ltd, a new fiber-quality, satellite-based, global Internet backbone for telecommunications operators (telcos) and Internet service providers to begin the begin deployment of a new high capacity backhaul infrastructure.
This is coming after NigComSat-1, the multi-million dollar Nigerian satellite launched in May 2007 was shut down in orbit the orbit ending the razzmatazz the greeted the project.
But the Galaxy Wireless Communications Limited and O3b Networks is entirely private sector driven and will enable Galaxy Wireless Communications on completion in about two years to provide high-speed, low-cost Internet connectivity to its emerging and fast growing subscriber base in the country. 
Mr. Gerald Nwosu the chief executive officer of Galaxy Wireless Communications told Nigeria CommunicationsWeek that the deal will support his company’s its G-MAX™ Broadband service.
G-MAX™ is a registered trademark of Galaxy Wireless Communications Limited for its product lines that best combine mobility with high data rates and ease of use by providing and offering a scalable, nationwide wireless broadband access network. 
It leverages on unique smart antenna capabilities and requires zero installation at the end-user site. G-MAX™ also offers true non-line-of-sight operation with the added benefit of portability.
The contract will enable Galaxy Wireless to deploy domestically and internationally an efficient IP backbone network, known as the G-MAXCLOUD™, with initial scalable bandwidth in excess of 2 Gbps to serve fixed and mobile operators, enterprises and internet service providers with an ultra low latency, web 2.0 capable internet experience. 
With five beams across the country, Galaxy Wireless Communications can plug into O3b Network’s fibre optic internet to enable Nigerians stream and download videos at an amazing speed.
