MSI Computers Nigeria Limited presented MSI-U100 Netbook laptops to the members of Team X from the University of Lagos, as a reward for winning Microsoft Imagine Cup 2009 finals in Nigeria. The team’s mentor, Dr. Ebun Fasina was also celebrated at a reception organized for the winners by the Computer Science Department at Unilag recently.
Team X emerged national winner of this year’s Microsoft Imagine Cup competition beating five other participating teams at the keenly contested software development challenge recently.
Team X’s winning entry is titled Autonomous Health Systems which in their words “puts access to maternal health at the finger tips of prospective mothers at their pregnancy periods, gets their health calls to the right personnel and supports their children from birth to age 5. Autonomous Health System achieves this by using the ubiquitous SMS technology.” The system is designed to provide rapid response to calls and by the right people.
Shade Joseph of MSI said, “We are delighted to be part of this laudable program aimed at encouraging our students to put their skills and imagination to use to create software solutions. This is the right direction for us as a country that desires pride of place in the IT world.”
“We also hope that in the final competition in Egypt, the cup would be brought to Nigeria,” she added.
She also commended Dr. Ebun Fasina and the Computer Science Department of Unilag, calling on other institutions and lecturers to be as committed and supportive of their teams as UNILAG and Dr Ebun Fashina in particular have been for the past three years. Teams from Unilag have won the competition for the last 3 years.
“We heartily congratulate Unilag’s Computer Science Department and its HOD, Professor Ojo Ayeni and Dr. Ebun Fashina for mentoring Team X and the teams that have won at Imagine Cup in the last three years.”
Mrs. Joseph encouraged more Nigerian students to take this great opportunity to propel themselves into the world of technology, pledging the company’s continued support to teams that excel at the competition and its continuous support for efforts aimed at increasing the level of technology advancement in Nigeria.
In his response, Prof. Ojo Ayeni, HOD of Unilag’s Computer Science Department said he was delighted with the success of TeamX, adding that he was happy that more computer science students from Unilag were participating at Imagine Cup. He pledged the department’s continued support for every student who would take the challenge.
“As a department we are committed to producing first class technology specialists who will make positive impact on Nigeria and gain global acclaim for excellence in technology development. We are very proud of all our students who participated and especially of TeamX for excelling.”
Also commending Dr. Fasina, he encouraged him to continue doing the good job that he has been doing growing future developers from the department.
Microsoft was also represented at the event by Mr. Ade Famoti, Software Architect, Oyeshina Oyetosho, Developer Consultant and Victoria N’dee Uwadoka, PR Manager. Mr. Famoti announced that from the progress the team has made with their project since the Nigeria finals he feels confident that they stand a strong chance of winning this year’s challenge in Egypt.
N’dee Uwadoka said that Microsoft is encouraged by MSI’s support for Imagine Cup, calling on other organizations to partner with Microsoft to encourage more IT students to apply themselves to developing software.
