Mugabe, Zimbabwean President Commends Nigeria Telecom Growth

President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe has commended Nigeria’s success in the telecommunications market, as the continent’s leading country in the sector.
Mugabe, who paid a scheduled visit to the Nigeria pavilion at the just concluded International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Telecom World 2009 in Geneva, said he was impressed with the rapid telecommunications growth in the country.
“I am impressed by the success recorded in the Nigeria telecommunications sector,’’ Mugabe said.
Mugabe was accompanied to the Nigeria stand by t Mr Houlin Zhao, deputy secretary general of ITU, and other ITU officials, who also visited other government agencies and private ICT companies stand at the pavilion.
Ernest Ndukwe, executive vice chairman of Nigeria Communications Commission, who received Mugabe, explained to him how Nigeria made these achievements in the past eight years under a liberalised telecom regime.
Ndukwe attributed these successes to the democratic government in Nigeria, which has supported a liberalised market and provided an enabling environment for foreign investors into the country.
Earlier, Nigeria had marked its national day at the Telecom World with a luncheon at the Ramada Park hotel in Geneva.
