Nine outstanding students of computer and other engineering related fields of UI and Lasu have been awarded full scholarships for the duration of their courses by the management of Multi-Links Telecommunications Limited (MLTL).
Mr. Thami Msimango, managing director, MLTL, who presented the scholarship to the beneficiaries in Lagos, noted that the partnership with the universities will sponsor nine students over a four year period to complete studies in Computer Science and Engineering related disciplines with view of employment upon completion of studies.
While noting that the students were selected based on their financial need and meritorious academic performance, he said that the sponsorship for the current academic year will cover full tuition, books, accommodation and living allowance.
Each of the beneficiary students also received a laptop computer and EV-DO card for connectivity to support individual academic and research work.
“Multi-Links believes in your potential and ability. We see you as our future team members and hope that you will remain exemplary performers to your colleagues and the communities you come from. More importantly, we hope that you will remain committed citizens of Nigeria and will give back to the country and continent,” he said.
The MLTL boss assured that the company will continue to provide funding and other academic support subject to students maintaining good academic performance, even as he pledged their commitment to skills development and economic activity of the Nigerian youth. “The youths must be adequately prepared to fit into and indeed be equipped to improve the economic and political spheres of Nigeria,” he said.
Mr. Moga Naidoo, chief human resources officer, said that Multi-Links Telkom intends to build skills pipeline of potential employees, adding that the bursary programme provides a good platform for building students and relationship before the world of work. “We intend to further expand this initiative next year and in the years ahead, expanding our sponsorship footprint to other institutions of higher learning in other states of Nigeria. We believe that by sponsoring young people in this way, we create a talent pipeline not only for our company but for the entire country in building ICT capacity.”
The recipients of the bursary were Ocheri Victor, Electrical Engineering, Akinpelu Olukunle, Mechanical Engineering, Omikunle Abiodun, Mechanical Engineering, Durodola Obadamilare, Mechanical Engineering, Fosudo Tolu Jude, Mechanical Engineering and Afolabi Tomilayo, Electrical Engineering, all of the University of Ibadan.
Others were Erukubami Omoniyi Mechanical Engineering, Abiola Olajumoke Mechanical Engineering, and Afolabi Tomilayo Electrical Engineering; all of Lagos State University.
