The National Bio-technology Development Agency (Nabda) has appealed to the National Assembly to pass the Bio-safety Bill to facilitate researches and development.
Mr. Victor Ibigbami, special assistant to the director general, Nabda, said in Abuja, that passage of the Bill would assist in addressing some challenges facing the economy.
"The Bio-safety bill should be passed quickly as it is an obstacle towards achieving research and development,'' he said.
Ibigbami said that without the bill, Nabda would not be able to carry out Bio-engineering for use in Agriculture, Health, Industries and Pharmaceuticals.
According to him, Bio-technology was the only key to address the problems of economic development in the country.
He urged the federal government to adequately fund the agency to enable it function effectively.
"There are a lot of things we need to do as an agency but because of fund constraints, Nabda can only do little within its limit,'' he noted.
Ibigbami stressed that China and India were able to drive their economy through the use of bio-technology.
"If Nigerians embrace Bio-technology, the country will achieve greatness in the world, and vision 2020 will be achieved,'' he added.
