NASRDA Plans ’edusat-2, Second Nanosatellite

National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has concluded all relevant discussions to build and launch of a second nanosatellite code named edusat-2 in collaboration with Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara State with emphasis on agricultural development.

Dr Felix Ale, head Media and Corporate Communications of the Agency, said, in a press statement Wednesday, that Professor Seidu Mohammed, director general of the Space Agency, made the announcement during a courtesy visit of the management team of Landmark University to NASRDA’S Headquarters in Abuja.

Professor Mohammed explained that the collaboration is being pursued as a result of the genuine interest and commitment of management of the University to the existing memorandum of understanding between the Agency and the University.

He said the proposed project is in fulfilment of its mandate which includes among other things, the development of satellites and provision of necessary technology and information for Universities to develop capabilities in satellite technology.

Professor Mohammed explained that the Nanosatellite which will be for Agricultural purposes will have on board an infrared camera for detecting diseased crops, monitoring of large agricultural areas as well as monitoring and understanding crop characteristics and other agricultural purposes.

While commending the management of the University, the NASRDA boss reaffirmed the commitment of the Agency towards collaborations that will contribute to Nigeria economic growth, as well as improve the general well-being of the people  through satellite technology.

He therefore called on engineers and scientists from both sides to be committed to the specifics of the collaboration by bringing to fore their expertise for a successful implementation of the memorandum of understanding, particularly the successful launch of Edusat-2 for Agricultural development.

Professor Adeniyi Olayanju, Vice Chancellor of Landmark University expressed delight on the development saying that the University was honoured in its partnership with the Space Agency.

He said, the proposed launch of the Nanosatellite for Agricultural development will not only be historic in the life of the University but a major breakthrough for research and educational development in the country.

Professor Olayanju said, Landmark University is Agriculture based and indeed very desirous to develop technologies that will improve the Agriculture sector in Nigeria.

This he said cannot be achieved without developing engineering that can promote mechanized and automated technology for Agriculture.

According to the Vice Chancellor, such technology can only be achieved by engaging and utilising satellite technology already domiciled in the Space Agency.

He commended the management and staff of the Space Agency for their efforts and activities which he said have contributed in the development of science and technology in the country.
