The National Broadcast Commission (NBC) has granted radio broadcast licenses to 18 tertiary institutions across the country, following President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s approval.
Giving the approval, the president urged the NBC to monitor the licensees to ensure that their operations were consistent with policy guidelines governing the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, as regards education.
The beneficiary institutions, which are to use the licenses for educational purposes include Lagos State University, University of Jos, University of Ibadan, University of Ilorin, University of Abuja, University of Uyo, University of Port-Harcourt, Caritas University, Bayero University, Federal University of Technology, Minna; Babcock University, Federal university of Technology, Akure.
Others are Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Igbinedion University, Usman Danfodio University, Cross River State University of Science and Technology, Kaduna Polytechnic and Akwa Ibom Polytechnic.
Engr. Yomi Bolarinwa, director-general, NBC, while congratulating the new licensees enjoined them to regard the Commission as partners in progress, even as he warned that the Commission will not tolerate any breach of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.
However, the new licensees have been invited to a ceremony this Wednesday to formally receive their frequencies, and be instructed on the legal boundaries for a broadcasting station.
