Captain (Mrs) Chinyere Kalu, rector,Nigerian College of Aviation College (NCAT), Zaria, has identified in flux of students into the college as has led to shortage of accommodation in the institution.
According to Kalu, a block of 70 rooms was commissioned last year while an executive hostel was opened two years ago to carter for more students
She said that the need was enormous as students have continued to enroll in the college. “As we are commissioning, it is being filled up and students are here. We can not turn them back”
“We have postponed a course for some students who want to come in two times because of accommodation problems”
The Rector announced that the problem of accommodation was being addressed as 200 rooms will be ready to accommodate more students in the next six months.
According to Capt Kalu, the NCAT in the last 50 years has been accommodating one student per room but explained that pairing of students became necessary as a result of the influx of students in the college.
She said bunk beds which were earlier used in the school will soon be introduced to accommodate students in the hostels pending when the hostels will be ready.
The Rector explained that accommodation was not compulsory for students as any interesting student will have his or her refund to look for accommodation elsewhere.
On feeding of students in the college, Capt. Kalu said she was acting on directives adding that no federal institution in the country was feeding students adding that she had already addressed students on the issues and advised them to bear with the college.
On the development of the college, the Rector said there have been tremendous achievements in the past few years ranging from awards to acquisition of a B737 plane for cabin crew training.
