The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) and Multichoice Nigeria have entered into a strengthened partnership aimed at reducing copyright violations and fostering the growth of the creative industry in Nigeria.

This agreement was reached during a meeting held between the Director-General, NCC, Dr. John O. Asein and a delegation from Multichoice Nigeria at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Dr. Asein underscored the significance of safeguarding investments in the creative sector, particularly in light of government’s focus on youth, the digital environment and creativity.

He stated that, “Those who invest their financial resources, talent, and time in the creative sector must have confidence in receiving returns on their investments” and assured rights holders that the implementation of the new Copyright Act would be carried out diligently, aligning with the Commission’s international commitments.

The DG also discussed the new provisions in the Copyright Act, which address online violations, technological protection measures, and digital rights management.

He stressed the need for massive public sensitisation and education to ensure that people are aware of these provisions and are more careful in their dealings with copyright works.

According to Dr. Asein, the NCC is also working on putting more regulations in place to reduce the vulnerability of the system.

He highlighted the importance of constructive and friendly regulations that do not stifle creativity but make activities friendlier for those creating works.

The drafting of these regulations is underway and Multichoice is expected to provide input to help create the right framework for the broadcast industry.

Ms. Caroline Oghume, Executive Head, Corporate Affairs West Africa for Multichoice, expressed the company’s commitment to driving anti-piracy efforts and supporting key campaign projects.

She highlighted the use of Multichoice’s Corporate Social Responsibility window to assist creatives and promote public awareness education.

Mr. Obi Ezeilo, Director of Operations, NCC, emphasised the importance of copyright to creatives and called for a stronger connection between the copyright space and creativity.

He encouraged Multichoice to increase its visibility in copyright offices and in the different spaces operated by the Commission.

Others members of the Multichoice team were: The Senior Manager, Corporate Communications, Ms. Kenechukwu Okafor and Head, Anti-Piracy, Multichoice Nigeria, Mr. Umar Abdullaziz.
