The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) has announced the inauguration of an IT merit Award, which first edition will be holding on December 15, 2009 at Sheraton Hotels and Towers, Lagos.
The organization’s decision to institute an IT merit Award was formed out of the will to reward excellence with honour, and was sealed at one of its council meetings to award deserving organisations, individuals and corporate bodies in order to lend credence to professionalism.
Prof. Charles Uwadia, president, NCS at a press conference to announce the first edition of the Awards, stated that it was NCS’ determination to conduct the event now, and for the first time to also carry out a public survey by requesting Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora to vote via SMS and provide an unbiased verdict on which individual or organization that is deserving of honour.
He observed that a number of organizations had in the past, awarded certificates of excellence in IT to individuals and non-governmental corporate organisations without any recourse to NCS, the umbrella organisation of all computer professionals in Nigeria. Although those award issuers have committed no offence, he noted, it is high time someone brought in credibility in the conferment of awards as experiences over the years have shown that awards are given to the highest bidder, and not necessarily by merit.
Reiterating that the selection process for winners was through SMS, newspaper and NCS’ website, Uwadia informed that the planning committee would only collate polls, present and announce the winners in each category.
The categories include Computer Organisation of the Year, Software Provider in Human Resources Services of the Year, IT Driven Bank of the Year, Payment Solution Provider of the Year, Best IT Media Reporter of the Year, Best IT Airline of the Year and Best Telecoms Company of the Year.
NCS calls for event sponsorship from corporate organisations in the Gold, Silver and Bronze classes with N5 million, N3.5 million and N2.5 million respectively.
