NESREA Seals Globacom’s Base Station in Plateau

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), has sealed one of the Globacom’s base stations in Plateau State for not adhering to its regulations.

The sealed base station is located in Dandur, Lantang North Local Government Area of the state.

Dr William Lappi, the North Central Zonal Director of the agency, who led a team of the agency in the operation, said that the company had failed to conduct a Site Specific Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

He said that it also failed to adhere to the provision of the EIA ACT of 1992, before erecting its facility in the area.

“The reason for sealing this facility is that it didn’t follow due process, to control the development of the telecommunication industry we have regulations. The Federal Government has developed regulations, to regulate the activities of the telecom industry, before you develop a base station, you are expected to mandatory  conduct a site specific Environmental Impact Assessment, you do that and give us an evidence of this work.’’

Lappi said, that the agency had given the company enough time to produce evidence of the EIA but failed to do so, adding that its Stop Work Order was also ignored by the company.

He alleged that the company also used substandard materials for the construction of the base station, adding that the fence erected around the facility had also collapsed.
