Genuine broadband is vital in order to secure communication and act as business enabler.
It is generally believed that broadband access to the Internet is no longer a luxury; it is a fundamental need for most households and businesses today.
As a matter of fact, the expansion and development of broadband is an essential component of economic sustainability.
Some countries decide to use satellite; others choose any other means to bring bandwidth at the doorstep of citizens.
It must be noted that the satellite industry is a high risk sector but it offers immense benefits for any nation that veers into it.
The manpower skill acquisition and infrastructure and possibility of socio-economic improvements are tremendous.
Nigeria decided on satellite and went ahead to Nigerian Communications Satellite (NigComSat-1) touted as promoter of technological advancement in Nigeria and beyond while enhancing government’s economic reforms, particularly in the areas of e-learning, e-commerce, tele-medicine, tele-education, and rural telephony.
NigComSat-1 built by Great Wall Industrial Corporation, China, was short-lived.
The satellite is total loss, because it lost both solar arrays.
The satellite, which is the third Nigerian satellite to be placed into orbit, was launched into a geosynchronous transfer orbit and subsequently it was successfully inserted into a geosynchronous orbit, positioned at 42.5oE. It had a launch mass of 5,150 kg, and had an expected service life of 15 years.
The satellite failed under questionable circumstances and left Nigeria now with the choice of either finding alternative to cut down the cost of access to the Internet or remain in the Dark Age.
The best choice is to prevail on the builders and insurers to replace the satellite and put the country on the path again for digital revolution.
In doing this, all the details neglected in the failed satellite must be carefully studied to avoid another technology calamity.
Government must shove under the carpet the matter of the failed satellite but ask all the principal actors to give detailed explanations and those found culpable punished.
NigComSat-2 or whatever the new satellite would be called must make powerful statements by immediately bringing down the cost of bandwidth, creating jobs and spearheading Nigeria’s match to the digital age.
