Abasiama Idaresit, managing director, Wild Fusion, a Lagos based digital media company has disclosed that Nigeria is the largest online audience on the African Continent and the 10th largest in the world.
He disclosed that a new statistics posted by the International Telecoms Union (ITU), shows that about 39.6% of all internet traffic from Africa is from Nigeria, about 29.8% of the population accesses the internet while 43.9 million Nigerians access the internet, making Nigerians the largest online audience in Africa and 10th largest in the world.
He made this known while answering questions on the way forward for digital marketing in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the British Broadcasting corporation (BBC) digital business division and its Nigerian representative, Wild Fusion, would be visiting notable Nigerian companies and advertising agencies.
Their visit is largely to promote digital media opportunities that exist on BBC Internet and Mobile platform to Nigerian brands and advertising agencies. They will also be educating members of the public on the need to embrace digital marketing.
According to Isla Pitt Mc Leod, Digital Business Development manager, BBC Worldwide, “The BBC’s international website is one of the largest broadcast news websites in the world, with over 29 million captivated users each month, BBC today boast of 58 international news bureaux and 250 correspondents around the world, it is one of the most respected sources of impartial and global news.”
We know the opportunities that exist in the digital space and our visit to Nigeria is occasioned by the need to increase awareness on the media opportunities that exist on BBC digital platform (internet and mobile) because with over 10 million impressions monthly, Nigeria is the largest BBC Mobile audience by country in Africa.
Abasiama Idaresit, commenting on the development said it would be a great opportunity for advertisers and brands that are seeking to engage consumers via internet and mobile especially those targeting a premium audience.
The BBC website is among the top most visited online destination by Nigerians. The BBC website attracts a more affluent, professional, educated Nigerian audience. Over 80% of the Nigerian users access the BBC websites on a daily basis. At least 65% of the BBC audience discusses BBC stories with their peers and almost a quarter of the users participate actively in the BBC forums.
