Nigeria vs Serbia Match, NYSC Portal Dominate Google Search

Nigeria’s Super Eagles 2-0 defeat to Serbia in the ongoing run of friendly matches in preparation for the 2018 World Cup in Russia dominated searches this week on Google.

Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Anglophone West Africa, disclosed this in a statement made available to Nigeria Communicationsweek on Wednesday.

He said “Nigeria’s Super Eagles defeat to Serbia on Tuesday, ending 0 – 2 down at the end of the friendly match, held in London, after they defeated Poland in a friendly on Friday trended most on Google search this week.

“Super Eagles fans took to Google search to get all the details of their team’s loss.”

Nigeria is playing a number of friendlies in the run up to the World Cup in Russia.

Kola-Ogunlade, said National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) came on the search light when they announced on Monday that it has opened for registration for the 2018 Batch ‘A’ prospective corps members.

He explained that with the announcement Graduates of universities and mono/polytechnics from Nigeria and abroad can register on the online portal until Sunday 8 April.

“Excited prospective corps members raced to Google to get all the details on how to enroll, making ‘NYSC Portal’ a trending search term.”

The Google manager noted that Palm Sunday was another thing that got people’s attention online.

He said that Nigerians joined in celebrating Palm Sunday this past weekend, stressing that “Palm Sunday is a movable Christian feast held the Sunday before Easter every year.

“It marks Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Worship services include a procession of the faithful carrying palms, representing the branches that the crowd scattered in front of Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.

“To mark the celebrations, Nigerians turned to Google to find Palm Sunday quotes and wishes to share with their loved ones and communities.”

Another thing that topped Google search this week according to Kola-Ogunlade, was the death of Sergey Mavrodi  founder of MMM, the company that ran one of the world’s largest Ponzi schemes in the country.

He noted that Mavrodi was reported to have had a heart attack on Monday in Moscow, at the age of 62.

“MMM reportedly defrauded between 10 and 15 million people over the years it operated.

“MMM launched in Nigeria in 2016, after it was launched in South Africa, India, China and Zimbabwe.

“Nigerians took to Google to find out more about Mavrodi’s death and MMM, making ‘Sergey Mavrodi’ a trending search term.”
