Nigerian Falconets Receive Boost from MTN Nigeria for U-20 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s Falconets have received a boost from MTN Nigeria as they took on the U-20 girls of the Central African Republic in their World Cup qualifiers game. The second leg of the U-20 World cup qualifier held on Wednesday, 6th October at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.

In the first qualifier game, the Falconets faced the Central African Republic in a 7-0 victory where they were unstoppable. On the scoresheet for the game, were Mercy Idoko, Esther Onyenezide, Joy Jerry, Deborah Abiodun, Taiwo Lawal and Yena Adoo.

The qualifier games are played to give countries the chance to participate in the U-20 World Cup competition, which sees 16 nations compete against each other for the trophy prize.

The Falconets impressed the country once again as they did the double against the Central African Republic U-20. Nigeria’s No. 22 opened the scoring with a goal in the 13th minute, and soon after No. 13 scored the second.

The second half was still for the Falconets as No. 13 made her second goal and Nigeria’s third for the game in the 49th minute.

Closing the scoring in an entertaining 4-0 win was the Falconets’ No. 10 who came off the bench. Winning 11-0 on aggregate sees the Falconets progress to the fourth round of this year’s U-20 World cup.

MTN Nigeria was present yet again at the stadium, turning up the viewing experience for the football fans.

MTN Nigeria will continue to cheer the Falconets on to victory with hopes that they join the past four winners of the competition which includes the USA, Germany, Japan and Korea DPR.

In September, MTN Nigeria announced its partnership with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) making them the official communications sponsor of the national teams.

This will see the company boost the national teams’ activities, including the national men’s team (Super Eagles), the Men’s Under 20 Team, the National Under-23 Team (the Dream Team), the National Under-15 (the Future Eagles), the National Futsal Team, the National Women Team (the Super Falcons), the National Female Under-20 team (the Falconets), and the National Women Under-17 Team (the Flamingos).

Speaking on MTN Nigeria’s long-lasting support for the girls, MTN Chief Executive Officer; Olutokun Toriola said “MTN’s support for Nigerian football is not recent.

“We have always been there supporting football in various segments of the Nigerian society – from grassroots football to the World Cup in 2010 and the national league because, Football is a national sport, uniting Nigerians across tribal, religious, and status lines, and providing engagement and excitement for millions of fans.”
